🌐 Today, Salvatore Aricò, CEO of the International Science Council, addressed the World Science and Technology Development Forum 2024, convened by the 中国科学技术协会(China Association for Science and Technology)(CAST). In his remarks, he emphasized that #science must break free from the confines of academia and actively engage with diverse stakeholders. The challenges we face - such as climate change and inequality - demand collaborative, actionable solutions that incorporate the insights and values of various communities. "These efforts on ‘science IN and FOR society’ entail the need to form the next generation of scientists who can understand complex problems through inter- and trans-disciplinary methods." - Salvatore Aricò. ❄ Engaging with global polar science at the Arctic Circle Assembly 2024. International Science Council CEO, Dr. Salvatore Aricò, recently attended the Arctic Circle Assembly 2024, the largest multi stakeholder dialogue on polar issues. The Assembly featured the Polar Dialogue, led by Arctic Circle Chairperson and former President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, building on the Polar Summit convened by French President Macron last year. Salvatore participated in an important session on the launch of the preparatory phase for the 5th International Polar Year (IPY-5 2032-2033), co-convened by the International Science Council (ISC), the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The ISC’s engagement in IPY-5 reflects our commitment to setting the global scientific agenda on pressing issues, as outlined in Strategic Priority 2 of the ISC Strategic Plan 2025-2028. During the Assembly, Salvatore held productive discussions with: 🤝 President Grímsson, who will join the Muscat Knowledge Dialogue during the ISC General Assembly in Oman in January 2025, to contribute to discussions on science diplomacy. 🤝 The National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada on their 'Arctic Pulse' initiative. 🤝 Rannís - The Icelandic Centre for Research, expressing interest in ISC's role in the IPY and expert contributions to the UN. 🤝 Representatives from the #Sami indigenous community on collaborations between science and traditional knowledge systems. 📸 : With Matthias Kaiser, University of Bergen and ISC Fellow (on the right), Anders Oskal, International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (in the middle), Salvatore Aricò, CEO of the International Science Council (on the left). #PolarScience #PolarSummit #ArcticCircleAssembly #InternationalPolarYear #IPY5 #ScienceDiplomacy #IndigenousKnowledge #ClimateScience #ClimateAction

At the Fellows signing ceremony for the launch of the Pacific Academy of Sciences, ISC President Sir Peter Gluckman stated that its establishment is "a dream come true." Sir Peter had long envisioned the need for such an academy, highlighting that the Pacific's voice was missing from global scientific discussions. He emphasized that the Academy was founded through a collaborative effort that began in #Apia a year ago when 70 scholars from various Pacific nations and territories gathered to initiate the formal establishment process. Enthusiastic support from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation / 公益財団法人 笹川平和財団, the Richard Lounsbery Foundatio, Royal Society Te Apārangi and The Australian Academy of Science, which supports the ISC’s regional focal point, has been instrumental. The Academy will provide a platform for #Pacific scholars to participate in global scientific discussions and shape the region’s future through #science. "As president of the ISC, I assure you of our warm welcome into the fellowship of academies and global scientific bodies. We encourage you to bring a strong Pacific voice to global scientific issues." The Fellows register, in shades of blue, symbolized the colors of the Pacific Ocean, while the pen, crafted from mother of pearl, added a symbolic connection to the region’s heritage. #PacificAcademyofSciences #PacificScience #GlobalScience
