I am immensely proud to have led the organization of what many have called the best edition of Latin America High Performance Computing Conference (CARLA) to date, in its 11th version. This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work of a dedicated team of 70 professionals across 28 committees, who devoted countless hours to making this event a reality.
CARLA 2024 brought together over 300 participants from 28 countries and offered a diverse program: 6 advanced tutorials, 5 workshops, 5 panels, and 30+ prestigious speakers sharing their insights on challenges and opportunities in high-performance computing (HPC), AI, and more. A notable highlight of this edition is the inclusion of a school dedicated exclusively to HPC system administrators. It is a space where they can share experiences and strengthen collaborations, as we know they are the backbone of our supercomputing centers. Thanks to Antonio J. Russo and Nicolás Wolovick for leading this initiative, and to all the professors for their efforts in making it possible.
My deepest gratitude goes to everyone who made this event possible:
• My fellow general chair, Jaime San Martin.
• Program chairs, Carla Osthoff and Esteban Meneses.
• Carlos Jaime Barrios Hernández.
• The teams from the Centro de Análisis de Datos y Supercómputo de la Universidad de Guadalajara, National Laboratory for High Performance Computing and CMM - Center for Mathematical Modeling, whose work was essential.
I also want to thank other institutions that supported us: SCALAC - Sistema de Cómputo Avanzado para América Latina y el Caribe, RedCLARA - Cooperación Latino Americana de Redes Avanzadas, Universidad de Chile, REUNA - Red Universitaria Nacional de Chile, EPFL, CSCS, CINECA, and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, along with our 16 sponsors, with some special mentions:
• Dell Technologies: Mauricio Chacon and Luis Díaz.
• Lenovo: Joaquim Merino and Christian Young.
• AMD: Nicolas Canovas and Juan Moscoso.
• NVIDIA: Marcio Gomes de A. and Fabio Alves.
• Intel: Gisselle Ruiz Lanza and Santiago Cardona.
• Versatus HPC, BeeGFS, Eviden with DDN, SONDA, IBM, Supermicro, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Entel Digital, Emtec Group, and Cendio ThinLinc.
Heartfelt thanks also to Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación and Aisen Etcheverry for their constant support and for honoring us with her presence at the opening ceremony. The Minister emphasized that we need to have capabilities in technology to advance as a country.
My sincere gratitude to Mateo Valero for his presence and invaluable contributions to supercomputing.
With CARLA 2024, we reaffirmed our commitment to advancing HPC in the region and creating spaces for collaboration and innovation. Supercomputing accelerates science and helps address the biggest challenges of our time, from climate change to health.
