We're often asked at Solsidus Law if we're #esgexperts or when we're amongst peers at focused #esg events such as the ESG SHIPPING AWARDS conference earlier, there's always a question on how we're able to support international businesses, regulated funds #SMEs or other entities in meeting the obligations set by the #CSRD. Aside from the practical answers to such questions (to which I'll get shortly), these questions reveal a gap between what's perceived to be required by the directive, and what's actually required and in fact, what's ultimately useful in this sector. ✅ The CSRD coming into force in 2023, made it compulsory to report on initiatives taken to comply with rules and regulations as regards environmental, social and governance matters. ✅ The new rules aim at safeguarding investors and other stakeholders by enabling them to access information to best assess the impact of companies' activities on people and the environment and evaluate risks and opportunities on sustainability. ✅ The first companies will have to apply the new rules for the first time in the 2024 financial year, for reports published in 2025. ✅ So who can best advise reporting companies on these issues? We've participated in several events locally and internationally recently, having an ESG focus, and not a single one of these events managed to cover the topic exhaustively. Because it is impossible. The only advice that's relevant on this topic, is one which takes into account, the specific industry, or entity that's receiving it. So, if I'm advising the board of directors of a shipping company on ESG topics, then I better know well those challenges that shipping companies face. For example, what impressed me during the ESG Shipping Awards Conference, was the attention on the wellbeing of crewmen/women onboard a vessel raised by Efi Smyrlaki. And how just this one issue can have tremendous impact on the smooth operation of the whole fleet and the business as a whole. On a similar note, Ms. Angela Stark of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. highlighted the cruise line’s community impact program aimed at fostering meaningful guest interactions with local communities, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful engagement. Positioned next to the board of directors who are required to not just report but also adopt #policies #guidelines that meet criteria promoting #sustainability is a fascinating place to be. The incentive to engage advisors who understand your industry and can combine this knowledge with legal and management expertise, should not be just the need to comply or avoid fines: it should be the very essence of CSRD which is to orchestrate a massive evolution in your industry from the inside out. Massive thanks to two impressive women Helena Athoussaki and Katerina Stathopoulou, FICS for curating this impactful event, and at such a charming location. 🙏

Our Alexandros Pitsillos and Stella Koukounis attended the esteemed ESG SHIPPING AWARDS Conference last week at Ble Pavillon #Athens where they had the opportunity to watch some incredible presentations on key topics for the #shippingindustry, with an #environmental #social and #governance layer. The principal organizers of the event Mrs. Helena Athoussaki and Mrs. Katerina Stathopoulou, FICS adeptly raised the bar in terms of diverse industry participation and content presentation, making this Conference both an interesting one to watch, but also, to learn from. Over the idyllic scenery of Alimos, a charming coastal neighborhood located in the southern suburbs of the #AthenianRiviera, personalities with vast experience and knowledge across a wide range of shipping-related disciplines delved into topics such as using #AI for #fuel consumption optimization and reducing emissions (for example the intention by Columbia Shipmanagement to use tech tools to achieve targets set by the #CSRD). Efi Smyrlaki Deputy Director of Laskaridis Shipping Co. Ltd. spoke about the importance of safety on board the vessels, and the use of #AI technology for operating a system of vigilance and notification. Later in the afternoon, as the sun set over the gleaming blue sea, the event drew to a close until next year.

An Unforgettable Evening at the #CGBA Beer & Barbecue Networking Event! We had the privilege of attending the CGBA Networking event, hosted by Lidl Cyprus Food Academy, for an amazing night of beer and barbecue. The atmosphere was truly captivating, enhanced by the presence of distinguished CGBA members, VIP guests, and diplomats. As always, it is such a pleasure to attend such a well-organized event, featuring plenty of delicious food and drinks, and, most importantly, the opportunity to connect with so many inspiring individuals. A big thank you to Cyprus Germany Business Association (CGBA) for hosting such a great event! Solsidus Law #networking #community

What should we do more? Listen more. The biggest takeaway from a successful BestLegal Cyprus this year, is that we should listen more. Lawyers should listen to their clients and adjust their service offering to the level required (always within the necessary regulatory framework), and vice versa clients should listen to their lawyers' advice on being proactive. At least if lawyers want to elevate their service offering, and if clients want to avoid excessive legal fees and preventable battles! A short list of 5 extra key takeaways: ✅ Relocation to Cyprus: each case is unique, apply the rules and don't overcomplicate simple cases; Remote work for third-country nationals in Cyprus is possible. ✅ 'Big names' don't always equal 'big on delivery': professional services are a 'peoples' business. Let us choose wisely. ✅ Legal fees: Everyone wants value for what they're paying, that should be a given. Value is delivered when knowledge, meets experience, meets drive, meets compliance. Empty promises on small or big legal cheques, are still empty. Let us simplify our fee structures wherever possible. ✅ Ignore legal tech at your peril: #AI may not replace all the lawyers around, but it will certainly replace mundane legal processes and can improve our overall service offering to our clients. ✅ Work ethic: My all-time favourite (🥹). Yes, to work-life balance; yes to health, wellness and wellbeing. Let us not forget, however, how we got to where we go to, that trust equals reliability and while there's only so much one can do, applying this mindset in the services sector can only take you so far. Yes to work ethic, yes, to responding to clients' urgency, yes to growth, and yes to not giving up no matter how difficult/complicated a task is.

A few days ago, on invitation by the marketing and strategy expert and a remarkable personality in the strategy, legal and business development sector in Cyprus, Ms. Natalia Kardash our #founder Stella Koukounis joined an esteemed panel of legal experts at Four Seasons Hotel, Cyprus for the BestLegal Cyprus UnConference, in #limassol. Actually, the 10th anniversary of the conference taking place in Cyprus. This year's format differed from previous years. Ms. Natalia Kardash took the bold step of meddling with the form of a successful recipe, delivering a unique event and, in our view, much more helpful and interesting than many others out there. Every bright idea runs the same risk of success or failure because, light years away from the idea, lies its delivery. And that's where it's make or break, same as with everything else in life. The idea of an 'unconference' was artfully delivered in the case of this year's Best Legal event. From the choice of topics to be discussed, to the venue, to the panelists 😇 to the constructive #networking and everything in-between. The very people who require, receive and rely on #legaladvice and operate in Cyprus, were given a platform to express their feedback on how things have evolved and can improve in the #legalsector. In juxtaposition, lawyers were given the opportunity to respond, to express their views, to share thoughts on how the sector (wider services sector) is of use, worthy to be relied on, and whether it can elevate to serve a more sophisticated type of clients.

Will #sustainability be the main driver force for growth in the future? A common regulatory framework, stakeholder collaboration and #greeninvestments seem to be the way forward in an interesting presentation yesterday by Nikolaos Athanasoulis of EY Greece, yesterday at the ESG Shipping awards Conference in Athens.

We are continuing the series of interviews with the female lawyers-partners of Cypriot law firms. In an era where the regulatory landscape grows increasingly complex, the role of legal counsel has never been more critical—particularly in industries like event management and renewable energy, where rapid evolution and high stakes meet. Stella Koukounis, an experienced lawyer, managing partner of Solsidus Law, shares insights into the legal obstacles that businesses must overcome, how to protect intellectual property in a world of instant media, and the delicate art of negotiation in high-stakes land deals. https://lnkd.in/dQ8hni_e #interviews #lawyers #lawfirms #SuccessfulBusinessMagazine

Feeling particularly proud that the #MED9Summit is underway at our beloved Paphos. An opportunity for heads of state to discuss the critical political situation of the region as close to the heart of the problem as possible. Our President, Nikos Christodoulides has welcomed the President of the EU Commission, the King of Jordan, and the leaders of the Mediterranean EU Member States highlighting the aim of creating a stronger, more competitive and strategically autonomous #EU. The agenda of the summit includes addressing pressing issues such as, the worsening humanitarian crisis, migration issues, concerns over energy issues and the climate.

When Natalia Kardash suggested I join BestLegal Cyprus as a speaker at this years' event at Four Seasons Hotel, Cyprus I was beyond excited. For a few obvious reasons, I mean have you looked at some of the other speakers? ☺️ I've known and admired Natalia, Sara Gunnervik and some of the other speakers for a while now, watching them take the lead in international conferences I attended, learning from the way they lead teams, and heading up world renowned firms, along the way. To be invited to join such a select panel, means more than I can possibly express in words. However, I was beyond excited for a couple more personal reasons, as well. Vestnik Kipra of the Vestnik Kipra Group was the first ever newspaper in Cyprus that published my work 😇 back in 2008 (it's even recorded in my LinkedIn profile), when I was making my first steps into the complex world of #corporatelaw; and boy has this world changed since then! And we've changed along with it. But like most first times at something new😊 this access to #Cypriot #media the trust shown to me by the newspaper's editor when we worked together for those articles, holds a special place in my heart until now. The chosen venue? Four Seasons Hotel, Cyprus is the place my family and I call home every NYE and New Years for the last 9 years and counting. Even after our family was down to a #singleworkingmummy of 2 😉. Looking forward to humbly adding to some valuable connections, conversations and synergies. See you at BestLegal Cyprus Stella
