The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a world-class, non-profit research and educational institution.

About us

The Institute operates under the aegis of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF), which is governed by a Board of Trustees, comprised of leading personalities of the international academic, political and business world; it is currently chaired by Professor Edouard Brézin, former president of the French Academy of Sciences and Professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. The principal objectives of CREF are the advancement of knowledge and its humane and benevolent application and the establishment of a new research and educational public-benefit organization which shall generally promote research and education in Cyprus and abroad and shall aim primarily at benefitting the public interest at large. The CyI is being developed by establishing research centers which address challenging problems that are important at both the regional and international levels. Its research centers are developed in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas. The Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) is developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC) in partnership with the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF), headquartered in the Louvre and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) in partnership with the University of Illinois. Multi-level founding partnerships with internationally prominent institutions ensure the development of the Centers in close collaboration with world leaders in their respective fields. Additional collaborations with other research and academic institutions together with local authorities further enhance the development.

▪️ Ernest Moniz, Professor of Physics at MIT and former Secretary of Energy, USA gives keynote address at the end of Day 1 of the International Conference on Climate Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. ▪️ The climate discussion should be viewed as one part of a simultaneous conversation around climate, energy, security and social equity, otherwise the headwinds in our society will be considerable. ▪️ Different societies across the globe must and will evolve towards low carbon at very different paces - one size fits all is not the answer and will impede progress. The nature of the transition should be the focus of serious discussions ▪️ “Clean electrons” are central to the climate solution, e.g. decarbonizing the electrical grid but its not enough. Hydrogen can play a huge part in the global energy agenda but innovation is urgently needed to bridge the gap in creating sufficient demand.

Water is the vital link, the connector, for all important resources such as Energy and Food, and is responsible for numerous conflicts around the world, including directly impacting migration. Hydrodiplomacy is an important avenue that allows countries to work together to resolve these issues, notes CyI Prof. Fadi Comair in his speech at the International Conference on Climate Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

The initiative is to be led by The Cyprus Institute As noted by CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas Stavros Malas II, a key pillar of this initiative is the creation of a “Regional Alliance for Climate Change” in the EMME region, and use of this partnership not only to fertilize the political process with key elements of the Regional Action Plan, but also use Cyprus' Presidency of the EU in 2026 as an opportunity for enriching the new Research Program of the EU, planned to be launched in 2028.
