O nás

The EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) provides safe and performant space services, enabling synergies, EU innovation, sustainability, and security. To achieve this, EUSPA manages the Galileo and EGNOS programmes, develops markets for Copernicus services and data, is involved in secure satcom (GOVSATCOM & IRIS2), and carries out work in various areas targeted at Security, Research and Development and increasing space’s contribution to the EU Market. The Agency is also responsible for the security accreditation of all the components of the EU Space Programme. EUSPA also operates the #EUSST Front Desk, protecting more than 400 satellites from the risk of collision with space debris or other operational satellites. EUSPA, staffed with skilled professionals bringing relevant experience from the public and private sectors, is unique in contributing to one of the most important and ambitious projects ever undertaken by the EU. We are committed to implementing the EU Space Programme and turning the EU space ambitions into a reality.

  • Protecting Forests from Space - International Day of Forests Forests cover a third of Earth’s land, hosting 80% of its biodiversity and supporting 25% of the global population. They play a crucial role in hydrological regulation, erosion prevention, and carbon storage. Yet, they face increasing threats from climate change, wildfires, and deforestation. Today, on International Day of Forests, we recognize the vital role of satellite technology in protecting and preserving these ecosystems. A long-time Copernicus champion, AXA Climate has been at the forefront of expanding parametric insurance into new market segments, including forestry. With the support of the Horizon Europe-funded SWIFTT Project, the company is leveraging Copernicus ECMWF Earth Observation data to develop innovative tools that help foresters monitor forest health, assess risks, and improve climate resilience. Through #EUSpace and collaborations like this, we are transforming space-based insights into real-world solutions for sustainable forest management. 🌳 EU Space

🌳 On #WorldForestDay, let’s talk about one of the major drivers of forest disturbance: wildfires 🔥 Wildfires are increasing worldwide due to climate change — but not all fires have the same impact on forests. At AXA Climate, we’re working with the EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme on a pilot project using #Sentinel satellite data to better assess wildfire damage, improve risk models, and explore new business applications in climate #insurance. We’re using dNBR (differenced Normalized Burn Ratio) from Sentinel images to measure burn severity — the degree of forest damage after a wildfire. By comparing satellite and ground-based burned area data, we refine our methods to reduce uncertainty. Our findings show: 🔎 Burn severity helps track long-term damage, not just isolated events. 🔎 Some forests are more vulnerable than others, with higher burn severity after a wildfire. This allows us to build tailored insurance products, adapted to local vulnerabilities and increasing risks. And, also connects to the SWIFTT Project which focuses on forestry applications of satellite data. ➡️ Congratulations to our team for taking a step forward in turning satellite insights into real-world impact for forest resilience: Luiz Galizia, Quentin Voituron 🌳, Ariane Kaploun, Beatrice B. and many others!

  • Harnessing Copernicus Data for Smarter Grid Balancing As the energy transition accelerates, grid operators face growing challenges in integrating renewable energy sources, particularly small-scale solar photovoltaics (PV). The uncertainty in production forecasting can impact electricity supply management, requiring larger reserve power margins and increasing operational costs. To address this, EUSPA's Proof-of-Concept process has identified a key solution: leveraging Copernicus data to enhance solar PV forecasting. Paris-based ARMINES has developed an advanced, GIS-based platform powered by Copernicus Atmosphere Service (CAMS) and Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) data. This dynamic application provides real-time solar mapping, improving forecast accuracy and helping Transmission System Operators (TSOs) optimise their grid balancing strategies. This approach not only enhances grid efficiency but also unlocks market opportunities for TSOs as they scale up their renewable energy operations. As solar capacity continues to grow, precise forecasting will be essential in maintaining a stable and cost-effective energy grid. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ea-YV-NZ

The Galileo Search And Rescue service once again proved its life-saving efficiency this week! Last Tuesday, a group of French nationals led by a high-mountain guide got endangered in the Norwegian back country. They immediately activated their FastFind-RLS Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), signaling a need for help at 09.49.14. No less than 6 Galileo satellites reacted almost immediately – turning their SOS into the launch of a rescue operation in less than one minute! Speed was of the essence, as avalanches were spotted in the area, presenting an additional threat to the hikers. Vital information was exchanged between the French Mission Control Centre and the Norwegian Rescue service in Stavanger, thanks to the Galileo Ground Segment. Once more, international cooperation and coordination led to a successful rescue - in just one hour! The state-of-the-art technology of the Galileo/SAR service, combined with a good preparation of the hikers and the necessary registration of personal information in their beacon allowed the Norwegian Rescuers to react immediately. This is also a source of inspiration for the colleagues working on future developments of the Galileo Search And Rescue service. 📷 Credit image: Norsk Luftambulanse.
