agri benchmark provides unique farm-level, data-based analysis of strategic issues for decision-makers in policy, agriculture and agribusiness. We are a global, non-profit network of agricultural economists, advisors, producers and specialists in key sectors of agricultural and horticultural value chains. Our core competence is farm-level economic analysis and benchmarking. As of today, we operate six branches: Beef and Sheep, Cash Crops, Horticulture, Organic, Pig and Fish. Founded in 2006 as a cooperation between the Thünen Institute of Farm Economics and the German Agricultural Society (DLG), the agri benchmark headquarters are located in Braunschweig, Germany at the Thünen Institute. agri benchmark partners work in more than 40 countries around the world. The network is led by a team that consists of more than 10 international and German economists. Once a year the individual branches host an international conference with the global network of partners. agri benchmark uses internationally consistent methods to analyse farms, production systems and their profitability. This farm-level knowledge is combined with expertise in international commodity markets and value chains. For agricultural economists – including students – there are several options to become part of this challenging and inspiring network: • Apply for a position as project manager and researcher. • Apply for a PhD scholarship. • Write your Master thesis on topics relevant to agri benchmark. We explicitly welcome international applications; knowledge of German is not a prerequisite since the official network language is English. Please visit our website for detailed information.

On October 23rd the agri benchmark Cash Crop Team in Braunschweig, together with our Japanese Partner Hisako Sekine, was invited for a visit of the FLECHTORFER MUHLE WALTER THONEBE. The managing director of the mill, Frank Plüschke, presented some insights into the company’s strategy: Highly efficient processing, regional sourcing and sophisticated quality management are key. What became clear: Their main customers from the bread and bakery industry are primarily concerned about the gluten content and the gluten quality of wheat flour; the protein content of wheat, which is the basis for wheat pricing in global markets does not really matter. We also learned that the science of gluten in the grain is not well understood. Mr. Plüschke told us that the correlation between the gluten and protein content is rather loose; therefore, the protein content is not a good proxy for their quality specifications. Our great thanks go to Flechtorfer Mühle for their hospitality and the openness of Mr. Plüschke and his team. It seems to us that it is worthwhile to do some follow-up work on the issue of wheat qualities, industry needs and political regulation of nitrogen fertilization. But for now we will enjoy the Flechtorfer pancakes…

In a special issue of DLG-Mitteilungen on the future of agriculture, agri benchmark employee Jannik Aaron Dresemann reports on a discussion process involving experts from various institutions. They have addressed the question of how the reduction in the use of fertilizers and pesticides desired by politicians and society can actually be achieved. Because one thing is clear: Scenarios developed at the desk hardly ever work. The experts' recommendations, on the other hand, are surprisingly clear: · The complex requirements of the Fertilizer Ordinance hinder the further development of agri-environmental policy. Nevertheless, nutrient losses must be reduced at farm level. Ambitious material flow balancing can identify those farms that exceed limit values. They can be sanctioned if necessary. · In plant protection, distinctions should be made among the protection of non-target habitats, the promotion of ecosystem services and extensification. Reductions should serve biodiversity and food safety, guided by market-based instruments instead of blanket regulations. The experts' proposals place greater emphasis on the polluter-pays principle rather than regulatory requirements. This would enable reduction targets to be achieved more efficiently. However, changes in agricultural administration and the use of digitalization would be needed to reduce the administrative burden. This requires standardized, user-friendly databases and political lead-time. 🌍 Global Pork Trade Flows in 2023: Spotlight on China and Beyond 🐖 The landscape of global pork trade continues to evolve, with 6 of the Top 10 trade flows in 2023 heading to China 🇨🇳. Key players such as Spain, the US, Brazil, Canada, the Netherlands, and Denmark remain dominant in this export market. Germany, however, faces ongoing challenges. Due to African Swine Fever (ASF), it has been largely banned from third-party exports, particularly to China, and now relies heavily on EU internal trade. Interestingly, Germany's lost share of exports to China has been absorbed by other EU countries, especially Spain. From 2014 to 2020, we witnessed a massive surge in export volumes to China, further accelerated by the ASF outbreak in 2019. This also reshaped the Top 10 export flows. However, by 2021 and 2022, import volumes decreased as China successfully rebuilt its herds and recovered production. Despite China's central role in the global pork market, the largest single export flow remains US to Mexico 🇺🇸➡️🇲🇽. agri benchmark: Livestock Conferences merged agri benchmark is the global network for the analysis of agricultural production systems coordinated by the Thünen Institute of Farm Economics. It is organised by agricultural branches. For the first time, the annual conferences for the beef, sheep, pork and poultry sectors took place in a single conference week and in one country. Our local network partner Atria Plc, Finland's largest meat producer, hosted the conference in Seinäjoki. The highlight was the so-called Global Forum with 250 participants from the entire meat value chain. In addition to the results at an international level, the conference provided insights into livestock production in Finland. For example, chicken production is salmonella-free because, among other things, the so-called splitting-system is not used. With this splitting system, as is common in Germany for example, the stable is opened and some of the animals are removed early to utilize the maximum permissible stocking density with the remaining animals in order to maximise production per place. In pig production, tail docking is not done, but piglets are castrated without anesthesia. Beef production is highly subsidized and produces excellent qualities based on dairy breeds. The use of peat as bedding in animal husbandry has many advantages, but should be viewed critically from an environmental perspective. It is foreseen to continue the successful concept in a comparable format in the following annual conferences in Austria, South Africa and probably Spain.
