The Aspen Institute Germany is an international, nonpartisan, and charitable organization. Its mission is to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussion and acting on critical issues. The individual and social values of the humanistic tradition are promoted through long lasting networks as well as a continued open-minded and critical discourse among top executives from Europe, America, and the whole world. The Aspen Institute Germany achieves its aims through regular meetings of interdisciplinary groups of decision-makers from the fields of academia, the economy, politics, culture, and the media, whose representatives might otherwise meet only rarely or are even in open conflict with each other. At numerous symposia, conferences, and discussion rounds, the Aspen Institute Germany engages in difficult questions of contemporary politics in detailed, candid, and confiding round tables in order to find common solutions for the challenges of our time.

Today Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner, Director of Aspen Germany, had the honor of meeting the President of the United States, Joe #Biden, at Bellevue Palace, where he was presented with the award of the Special Level of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. After the reception, she stated: “As only the second U.S. president alongside George H.W. Bush to be honored with the special level of the Grand Cross, Joe Biden’s role as a pioneer for transatlantic relations, especially between Germany and the United States, was made clear today. In his time in office, and in the 40 years before, he did not only support governmental, but also societal exchange between our countries. It was my honor to congratulate and thank Joe Biden, personally and in the name of the Aspen Institute Germany, for his work! His message that there is no stability without a strong German-American bond really inspired me – and I can assure you: We, Aspen Institute Germany, will keep working on that!”

And that’s a wrap! We are grateful to all the participants for their thought-provoking contributions on the matter of “Good Technology – Good Democracy?”. We also must express our gratitude to Dr. Leigh Hafrey of MIT for guiding the discussions! We must also thank the Socrates Program of the Aspen Institute, United States for its support. None of the discussions in the last few days would have been possible without them. It was a truly inspiring group of participants from both sides of the Atlantic. Please stay tuned for the next Seminar of the Philosophy & Practice series, which will be hosted next year from June 12-15 at Gut Klostermühle.
