MCAP and ROS 1 bag are two broadly comparable file formats for recording robotics data. The Mobility & Transport Analytics group at Salzburg Research is offering a two month paid internship working with LiDAR-data collected by our research bicycle. ## Watch the TU Delft SenseBike riding to an AI generated soundtrack ## Last year I won a grant from the TU Delft Climate Action Programme for the concept of sustainable data collection from a lidar-equipped bicycle. We purchased a bike from Boréal Bikes, as well as 3 RoboSense lidars, 3 cameras, IMU & GPS, and got to work. 2 Master students and 4 Bachelor students optimized the sensor placement, built the sensor mounts, worked on calibration, synchronization and localization. We learned that there are many open challenges where automotive methods do not transfer directly, such as the non-rigid frame of the bike, that requires a dynamic re-calibration of the sensor positions in real-time. Using the MS3D++ method, we transferred existing object detectors from self-driving cars to our bicycle, without the need to annotate the data ourselves. This allows us to capture data about cyclist behavior on the campus. Now we are using the bike to collect real-world data, use SLAM to map the campus and manually label it. This data will then be used to build a lidar segmentation method that can map new areas on-the-fly. Finally, we used an AI generated soundtrack about smart bicycles that is guaranteed to give you a Last Song Syndrome. It is amazing to see how far this technology has come. Our first full paper utilizing LiDARs on a Smart Bicycle was just published! It is based on the impressive master's thesis by Armin Niedermüller, who's also the first author. He developed and trained a neural network to automatically segment LiDAR point clouds into cycling path, vegetation, buildings... See the image for an impression of the segmentation results.
