Energising the Tube (London Underground) Many of the metal components manufactured in our iron foundry in Stukenbrock near #Bielefeld cannot be seen. Like those that help to supply the #London Tube with electricity.⚡ At more than 160 years old, the world's oldest (and probably most famous) underground railway is supplied with electricity via the third rail, also known as conductor rail or electric rail. 💡 Cast iron with nodular graphite (EN-GJS) is a key iron material, but that’s not all… it’s the basis for another wonderful material that we provide: SiMo spheroidal graphite cast iron (or: silicon molybdenum ductile cast iron). Until the 1960s, SiMo was traditionally combined with compacted graphite iron (CGI, also known as vermicular graphite iron), e.g. for producing exhaust manifolds. Then cast iron with nodular graphite entered the scene. SiMo materials are used for applications at high temperatures. An increased addition of silicon increases the resistance to scaling and reduces damage to the material due to internal oxidation. Molybdenum as an alloying element increases the high-temperature strength. There are suppliers of SiMo grades that can withstand exhaust gas temperatures of up to 950 °C 🔥. SiMo components only deform if they are exposed to temperatures above the austenitic transformation temperature for an extremely long time. The material has proven itself in practice, e.g. for highly stressed exhaust manifolds in cars, buses and lorries, turbine housings for diesel engines or exhaust gas recirculation systems. SiMo materials are standardised in the DIN EN 16124 standard. #ironcasting #industrialengineering #germanengineering #materialscience
