🌍 Climate scientist Friederike Otto is studying the impacts of climate change on extreme weather events. As a climate researcher she was one of the authors of the assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) and has shaped the still young field of attribution research, which examines the impact of global warming on specific extreme weather events. 'Attribution research reveals how climate change has already led to changes in our weather, like the fact that the flooding in Central Europe a month ago is no longer something that occurs just once in a century but at least twice as often. At the same time, it shows which people are losing their lives or their livelihoods - and why. Both types of information are essential if we are to become more resilient, while also showing just how incredibly expensive failures in climate policy already are and who is paying the price', the climate researcher explains.

📍 The American brain researcher Erin Schuman came to Germany with her husband in 2009. Together they set up two new departments at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt am Main. Besides her own research, Erin Schuman was keen to pursue another important goal. The institute’s new building was provided with an annex featuring a nursery, a baby changing room and a nursing room because she knew from her own experience as a scientist and mother just how difficult it can be for women in #research: if they stop working for too long to care for their children they will get left behind and no longer keep pace with current research. Schuman was determined that her future colleagues would not be forced to choose between an academic career and a family. At the same time, she campaigned to increase the proportion of women in leading scientific positions. 🤝

The opportunities for engineers from abroad in #Germany have never been better! Even though Germany has a long tradition of engineering, the number of people entering engineering courses is dropping. The result: around 170,000 vacancies! Companies are now prioritising recruiting #SkilledWorkers internationally. One in ten engineers in Germany already comes from abroad! ✈️ Bilge Atıcı Sevketbeyoglu is Deputy Head of Airworthiness at Lilium, a young German aerospace company which is developing a fully electric jet for regional use. Her role is to ensure that the jet and its systems meet the necessary safety and performance standards and fulfil the requirements set by air travel authorities. 🇹🇷 🇩🇪 Having gained her degrees in Ankara/Turkey, she was always drawn to working in Germany. “Germany has one of the world's largest economies and offers many different development opportunities for engineers,” she says. She also enjoys the international environment at Lilium and other benefits of working in Germany: "I like the work-life balance!“ Find out more about Bilge in our digital magazine: 👇 https://lnkd.in/d4ahQid5 #WorkInGermany

🎓 Germany's popularity as a place to study is growing! The number of students from abroad has increased for the second year in a row, to almost 367,000. Many of them come from non-EU countries. And the employees at universities are also becoming more and more international: professors, post-docs and guest researchers come to German universities from all over the world to research and teach under excellent conditions. Not convinced yet? The figures from our colleagues at the DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst speak for themselves. 👇

Germany continues to be a key destination for international talent in academia! In 2022, academic staff at German universities represented a broad spectrum of global perspectives, with significant contributions from Europe, Asia, and other regions. This international collaboration is vital for fostering the exchange of knowledge and innovation across borders – and a core objective of the DAAD's work. 🤝 Many regions and industries in #Germany are facing a shortage of well trained workers, and demand is only going to continue growing. This is why the Federal Government is promoting a modern immigration policy to attract international #SkilledWorkers. As a general rule, anyone with a qualification can pursue any skilled occupation. In addition, skilled workers can immigrate if they have two years of professional experience and a state-recognised professional qualification from their country of origin. Thanks to various options such as the #OpportunityCard, it is now also possible to enter Germany without a long recognition procedure. You can find out what the legal basis is and what new regulations there are here. 👇 #WorkInGermany

How can international collaboration improve people's lives? A research project between Germany and New Zealand makes this clear. The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH and the Leigh Marine Laboratory (LML) at the The University of Auckland are investigating the so-called secondary metabolites produced by algae. These pigments or antibiotics could be of interest for both pharmacological and nutritional applications. Find out more about the project! 👇
