It is estimated that the healthcare sector generates 30% of the global volume of new data annually. The success of global and public health, healthcare services, and research will depend on how effectively this data can be accessed and utilized. To establish a strong foundation for health data, information from different sources and countries must be brought together. This requires strategic alliances, technical solutions, and shared data standards. Europe is already leading the way with the European Health Data Space. Building on this example, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH are working together to create the conditions for global health data spaces in the long term. This offers a multitude of opportunities, from better healthcare and stronger research to economic growth and enhanced global cooperation. Last week, Charité and GIZ held their second strategic workshop, focusing on leveraging digital health solutions, advancing local production of vaccines and medicines, tackling Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), and sharing insights from health systems strengthening in Africa, Germany, and Ukraine. These discussions are key to advancing data-driven healthcare and global health innovation. 🙏 A special thanks to all our Charité and GIZ colleagues Heyo K. 🎉 Celebrating 10 Years of Impact! 🎉 Under the theme "Over to You – Celebrating Impact, Sharing Learnings, and Ensuring Continuity after 10 Years of Implementation," GIZ and partners proudly reflected on a decade of transformation through the Food and Nutrition Security Programme (FNSP). 🌍 The German Ambassador, Ute König, shared, "FNSP has been more than just a programme. It has been a catalyst for transformation." Over the past ten years, the programme has among others: ✅ Reduced malnutrition ✅ Improved dietary diversity ✅ Strengthened nutrition governance and education at the community level These efforts have empowered local communities, enhanced district-level and national nutrition governance, and raised awareness on the importance of healthy diets. 🍎🥦 Dr. George Chithope Mwale, Director of Nutrition, shared: “The past ten years have been a testament to the power of collaboration. FNSP has shown that when government, communities, and development partners work together, lasting change is possible.” FNSP's legacy is built on evidence-based interventions, laying a strong foundation for Malawi’s nutrition agenda and creating an enabling environment for nutrition. 🌱 "The knowledge we gained from FNSP is within us, and we will continue sharing it, and supporting households with different Integrated Homesteaf Farming techniques“ said Chrissy Chimphoya, one of the programme beneficiries who is also a promoter. As Ambassador Ute König emphasized, "The end of FNSP is not the end of our support. It is the beginning of a new phase." 🌟 Introducing STEP UP! – Sustainable Transformation of Food Systems – Empowering Pathways Bottom-Up! 🚀 Dr. Samson Ndolo, Principal Secretary for Health, reminded us: "Let us remember that these successes belong to us. That’s why it is Over to Us. We will write a new chapter, and the sustainability of the project lies with all of us now." ✍️ These successes are a true team effort, driven by the dedication of GIZ FNSP, district councils, Self Help Africa, CARE Malawi, and the communities who made it all possible. 🙌 The project team and implementing partners reflected on 10 years of remarkable achievements, culminating in a symbolic passing of the torch – an artwork handed over to Ute König and Dr. Samson Ndolo by the project team leaders, Dr. Martina Kress and Vitowe Batch. 🎨✨ Here’s to continuing the journey toward sustainable nutrition and healthier futures for all! 🙌 FNSP was financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. #FNSP #OverToYou #SustainableTransformation #STEPUP #HealthyFuture #NutritionMatters

How can local feminist perspectives enhance sustainabable development? At GIZ we believe, our projects are only successful if they include women. We asked IDOS to partner up with the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), Gender in Detail, and the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre (GSHRDC) to give it a closer look. Check out the study and the other inspiring discussion papers linked below ⬇️
📖 Synthesis Study: "Local Feminist Perspectives as Transformation Levers for Greater Gender Equality" The present study builds on the expertise, knowledge and experiences of partners from Ghana, India and Ukraine. It introduces local feminist perspectives as levers for transformative change for greater gender equality that can produce context-specific alternative approaches to development processes by addressing prevailing norms and practices, and thereby enhance access to resources and improve the political participation of women, girls and members of the LGBTQIA* communities. This synthesis study identifies common themes, challenges and opportunities across the three case studies prepared by the partner organisations- the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), Gender in Detail and the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre (GSHRDC): - "Local feminist perspectives as transformative levers: women’s health and climate action in India" https://lnkd.in/e34G3vxN, Sreerupa Sengupta, Divya Singhal, Ananya Chakraborty, PhD - "Local feminist perspectives as transformation levers for sustainable development in Ukraine in the context of ongoing defence", https://lnkd.in/e_86TnUa, Olena Strelnyk, Liudmyla Yuzva, Tamara Zlobina - "Feminists’ perspectives as transformative levers in Ghana", https://lnkd.in/exfv34Ts, Dr Fidelia Ohemeng, Deda Ogum, Deborah Tayo Akakpo, Dorcas Coker-Appiah 💡 Click here for the synthesis study: https://lnkd.in/edPJm2Gd, by Dr. Jacqueline Wingens, Stephan Klingebiel & Maryam Khalid. 📅 Save the date: On 19 March, IDOS will host the Final Synthesis Conference of the project ‘Local feminist perspectives as transformation levers for greater gender equality' in Berlin: https://lnkd.in/ejB3yZKP. * This study is funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH as a GIZ self-financed measure.

Our Managing Director Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven and the CEO of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Francesco La Camera, are calling for urgent action on energy access. 🌍🔋 In 2022, about 685 million people lived without access to energy, while 2.1 billion continued to rely on polluting and hazardous cooking fuels. To address this crisis, distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions are essential. GIZ and IRENA are partnering to accelerate energy access through DRE, working alongside organisations like The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). For instance, over the past 20 years, the Energising Development (EnDev) multi-donor partnership, implemented by GIZ and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency together with local and international partners, has provided energy access to over 31.6 million people across Africa, Asia, and Latin America at an average cost of just 12.2 € per person. This success is achieved through result-based financing and market-based support tailored to specific country needs. Next week, during our side event with IRENA at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue we will dive deeper into the topic of "Green Skills for a Just Energy Transition: Strengthening Global Cooperation to Prepare the Workforce for a Sustainable Future”. Join us and meet Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven and Francesco La Camera at Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, if you are there! Climate action is social protection! 🌎 Climate change is altering the types of risks people face, making social protection crucial for managing these risks. Social protection systems can identify and support those affected, build their resilience, and enhance their abilities to reduce emissions and adapt. Therefore, social protection needs to be integrated within the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): 1️⃣ To ensure climate action is successful and inclusive. 2️⃣ To leverage your country's social protection system to assess, identify, and address people's vulnerabilities and needs to ensure they benefit from climate action. 3️⃣Social protection systems provide a foundation for addressing the long-term social, economic, and environmental challenges posed by the climate crisis. With #NDCs 3.0, countries receive practical advice and consultation options from the NDC Partnership, United Nations, and other partners to integrate social protection into their climate action. #ClimateAction #SocialProtection Read more ⬇️

#ForAllWomenAndGirls This year’s UN theme for #WomensDay calls for action to unlock #equalrights, #power, and #opportunities for all, creating a feminist future where no one is left behind. At the heart of this vision is the empowerment of future generations—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls—who serve as drivers of change. At #GIZ Lebanon, we are supporting women on various levels. Watch our podcast with Zaven Kouyoumdjian hosting Maitre Brigitte Chelebian, founder and President of Justice Without Frontiers. Chelebian talks about #GenderBasedViolence in this episode. Stay tuned for more episodes. These initiatives, commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), are implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Over 10.000 students can now study in clean schools! In Manado (Indonesia), Amelia Tungka and Anna Clerici introduced a weekly collection of plastic waste from schools in 2024. Across the regional capital of North Sulawesi, GIZ has supported us in establishing a reliable collection system. Collaborating with the schools is not just about waste collection. It is also about reducing single use plastic waste as we provide the students with refillable plastic bottles. This waste stream from schools (together with the incredible plastic waste volumes collected from river barriers) have further grown our plastic waste volumes in 2024. Since start of our project, we have collected 800 tons of plastic waste. As we grow our project, we create new jobs: in the past months, we hired two informal waste pickers who used to work at the landfill of Manado under extremely bad health and safety conditions. Now, we can provide them a regular income, working safely, and with benefits, in our ocean plastic waste sorting station. All of us collaborating on this project...we all contribute our different expertise and networks like pieces of a puzzle: Personally, i want to thank my colleagues at #BASF - our team has a treasure of knowledge in creating circular plastic value chains with partners. We benefit from this experience tremendously as we scale our project in South-East Asia. Personally, i know very little about marine biology, but this is exactly the knowledge that Miriam Weber and Christian Lott contribute to our project. Also, i have learnt that changing consumer habits of people often requires a change of product design. This is where William McDonough provides enormous wisdom to our project team. Myself, i am not aware of the habits and traditions of people in Indonesia. This is where Amelia provides all the insights to our team. Finally, coordinating all of our activities and reaching the scale of our current project would be impossible without the leadership of Anna on the ground. If you want to learn more about the activities of the No-Trash Triangle Initiative, check out the milestones that Anna compiled in our annual report 2024. The link to our report is in the first comment below.
