Das Institut für Bauweisen und Strukturtechnologie gehört zum Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) und entwickelt Hochleistungsstrukturen für viele Anwendungsbereiche (Luft- und Raumfahrt, Verkehr u.a.) von der Konzeption bis zur Produktionstechnologie. Das Institut verteilt sich auf die zwei Standorte Stuttgart und Augsburg. In Stuttgart sind vier Abteilungen angesiedelt: - Bauteilgestaltung und Fertigungstechnologien - Keramische Verbundstrukturen - Strukturelle Integrität - Raumfahrt Systemintegration In Augsburg befindet sich die Abteilung „Automatisierung und Qualitätssicherung in der Produktion“. The Institute of Space Systems is at the International Astronautical Congress! #IAC At the DLR booth, our #CALLISTO project is displaying a model of a CALLISTO landing leg which was developed together with the DLR Institute of Structures and Design and the Institute of Material Research. The project focuses on reusability of launcher systems and aims to develop, implement and demonstrate the key technologies needed for Vertical Take-off and Vertical Landing rocket stages #ReusableRockets. The IAC takes place this week in Milan and expects over 8,000 experts from the industry. Capturing Innovation in pictures! 🛰️ After showcasing our developed innovative manufacturing process of IWC Schaffhausen's Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) watch case in our latest video, we now want to share some special moments from this work through photos. At our institute, we not only set the standard in the area of materials development but also apply this expertise to the development of components made of CMC. Using the Liquid Silicon Infiltration process developed at #DLR, it is possible to produce CMCs on-site on an industrial scale quickly and economically. Our institute has become a leading player internationally in this field thanks to this process. This is reflected by the numerous components developed in cooperation with industry that have now been turned into marketable products. With this technology, our institute is represented in all relevant #space projects in Germany and across Europe, and is also involved with components used in aviation and the transport sector. With ours years of expertise in CMC development, we were able to support IWC Schaffhausen in creating a manufacturing process for the first CMC watch case. This technical collaboration was an important step in demonstrating the feasibility of small components made from ceramic composites. On Tuesday evening, we had the pleasure of a visit from the Minister of State for Digital Affairs, Dr. Fabian Mehring, who wanted to find out more about our research at our DLR sites. From Space to the Wrist: The Innovative Process Behind Our Collaboration with IWC Schaffhausen 🚀 Following the successful press event last week, we're excited to share the video that dives into the revolutionary process behind the Ceramic Matrix Composite watch case – a technology born from aerospace research and developed by #DLR! The starting point: a polymer reinforced with carbon fibres. The fibres are shredded and infiltrated with resin, followed by a specialized pressing technology for short carbon fibres, which forms the raw part. During the high-temperature pyrolysis process at around 1,600°C the part is "baked," freeing it from binders and forming a porous carbon fibre-reinforced body. The key step: siliconization. At temperatures over 1,425°C, silicon melts, fills the pores, and reacts with carbon to form a new silicon carbide ceramic structure. The resulting case is so hard that only diamond tools can machine it. Precision, quality, and reliability are essential in both #aerospace and watchmaking. At every step, we make sure that the material meets the highest standards by using non-destructive methods such as computed tomography. Our collaboration with IWC Schaffhausen demonstrated the feasibility of fibre-reinforced ceramics for small components, advancing both the material and its manufacturing processes. These innovations will also benefit future aerospace applications, like satellite propulsion systems. Extraordinary technology transfer: from space travel to a watch case 🚀 We’re excited to announce a fantastic collaboration and the successful completion of an innovative technology transfer project! At a press event hosted at the DLR site in #Stuttgart, we had the opportunity to showcase the results of it. With our decades of expertise in carbon fibre-reinforced ceramics, built on pioneering research in areas like space exploration – such as developing thrust chambers and thermal protection shields – we were able to support IWC Schaffhausen in creating a pioneering manufacturing process for the world’s first ceramic matrix composite watch case. This extraordinary technology transfer showcases how advanced materials, originally developed for aerospace applications, can set new benchmarks in other industries while also enriching our own research. The technical collaboration with IWC Schaffhausen was an important step in demonstrating the feasibility of small components made from fibre-reinforced ceramics in particular. The results help to further advance the material and its manufacturing processes. Many other projects for aerospace applications can benefit from this - for example, our work to further develop fibre ceramic components for satellite propulsion systems.
