"I hate math!" Today, I had the pleasure of working with a second-grade student who walked into the lesson with the strong, familiar declaration: “I hate math!” This wasn’t the first time she’d made that statement. In fact, her resistance was clear from the start. She wasn’t interested in a worksheet I gave her, even though it had the promise of a fun and creative twist—calculating areas and then painting a picture. It made me pause for a moment. Was I missing something? Was I not connecting with her? And then I remembered something crucial: As teachers, we must always reflect on how we’re teaching, not just what we’re teaching. In this case, it wasn’t her dislike of math—it was the teaching method that wasn’t clicking with her. So, I switched gears and introduced a digital learning tool. Her reaction was instantaneous: She softened, engaged, and started enjoying the lesson. This small but important shift reminded me that teaching is not one-size-fits-all. Some students may need a different approach, and it’s our job to find it. I also take time to make sure they feel heard by asking about their holidays, complimenting their pencil case, or anything that makes them feel more at ease. By the end of the lesson, despite her initial resistance, she admitted, “It was good!” That small moment of success is why I do this. Here’s another tip: A strategy that works wonders is turning the tables and letting the student take the lead. When a student says, “I don’t like this,” I sometimes say, “Okay now, you’re the teacher!” This usually leaves them stunned, but then I ask them to stand in front of me and teach the topic. It’s amazing how the student’s pride and sense of ownership suddenly changes the dynamic. In another case, a student taught me something, and we ended up playing a small game. I made a mistake, and the student gave me a low mark - an F. I made another mistake, and the mark went even lower to a G! This turned the whole situation around, and the student laughed joyfully and gained so much confidence. Finally, the lesson was finished by the bell but the student didn't want to leave the classroom. She said, “No, the lesson should not be over—we will continue with the game!” The key takeaway: Never assume the student is the problem.
