It was an absolute pleasure to host the Berlin Open RAN Working Week (#BOWW) at the Science Tech Space @ HHI, organized by our friends from T-Labs. Over two days, we engaged in insightful discussions, talks, and networking focused on #OpenRAN and its impact on the future of communication networks. Prof. Slawomir Stanczak gave a talk where he delved into the critical role of next-generation #AI in #6G networks. He emphasized the need for AI to manage communication resources — like energy — efficiently and in a task-oriented manner. Emerging 6G applications, such as collaborative #robotics and formation control, are pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities and are changing traffic patterns in networks. The challenge ahead is clear: 6G requires AI with physical intelligence — the ability to interact with the real world by perceiving, controlling, navigating, and adapting to dynamic environments. Exciting times ahead for AI and 6G! More on the event here: https://lnkd.in/dN3X7RZj After BOWW, we continued with the i14y Lab Summit 2024 and enjoyed more talks, demos, panels and sessions about Open RAN. We were excited to lead a lab tour for summit participants and talk about our trail-blazing research towards standard compliant #NetworkDisaggregation.

To solve a situation, sometimes you just need to take a step back and look at the full picture. In case of #CivilSecurity in humanitarian crises & natural disasters, the best solution might be to take a huge step back – even into #space. This is what European Space Agency - ESA is aiming to do with their "Civil Security from Space" (CSS) Hub. As part of a European network, #CSS promotes the development of a resilient, #sustainable, and secure society that can respond quickly to threats and emergencies. To do this, ESA has commissioned us together with CGI to study the feasibility of this endeavor - leveraging synergies between space technologies, including satellite communications (#satcom) and Earth observation (#EO), and combining them with disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (#AI). The Applied Machine Learning group of Jackie Ma will contribute its expertise in AI-based Early Warning Systems, and services developed in the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz-funded DAKI-FWS project. The experiences from the focus group on AI for Natural Disaster Management (currently turning into a Global Initiative!) allows us to actively involve first responders in the design of the platform, to tailor it to the people who will use it. Did you know that at Fraunhofer HHI, we are actually doing rocket science? 🚀 Unlike on earth, the vacuum of space means that it is not possible to transfer energy in the form of heat to the environment through thermal conduction – so space-appropriate thermal regulation is key. Our solution? Structuring the surfaces of existing space components using nanosecond #lasers under a reactive gas atmosphere. In the #NanoBLAST project, our researchers are driving the economic implementation of thermally highly emissive surface structures for #space components together with Azimut Space GmbH. Structured surfaces have many advantages over conventionally used paints: ✅ Less susceptible to temperature & compatible with radiation in space ✅ Cost (& energy!) saving during launch, as the launch weight of the vehicle is reduced by eliminating the coating ✅ No need for additional tests and certifications as the base material is not chemically altered ✅ Minimal ecological footprint, no need for fine chemicals & solvents to coat the component Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gmJfigRN Thank you to Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz for funding this project!
