🎉 Today, we celebrated an important milestone for the Fraunhofer IAPT in Hamburg-Bergedorf as we broke ground on our expansion project. Prof. Dr. Ingomar Kelbassa, Katharina Fegebank, Prof. Dr. Axel Müller-Groeling, Prof. Dr. Andreas Timm-Giel and Ulf von Krenski. This groundbreaking ceremony in Bergedorf is a major investment in strengthening Hamburg as a business location. The initiative, supported by the federal government, the federal state of Hamburg, and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, aims to enhance applied research and development in Additive Manufacturing. 🌱 Infrastructure for Industry-Driven #Research - The new facility, spanning 1,100 square meters, will provide accessible pathways across the entire Additive Manufacturing process. Users will collaborate with our experts to explore scenarios from design to post-processing, achieving significant cost and material savings. ♻️ Sustainable Practices #Sustainability is a priority for us. The new building will utilize eco-friendly materials and feature a photovoltaic system, heat pumps, and charging stations for electric vehicles. Our existing facility will also be upgraded with energy-efficient technologies. Nachhaltige Technologie verdient eine zukunftsfähige und umweltfreundliche Bauweise Das Fraunhofer IAPT ist eine weltweit führende Einrichtung im wissenschaftlich-industriellen Technologietransfer im 3D-Druck. Der Spatenstich für den Erweiterungsbau des Fraunhofer IAPT setzt ein Zeichen über die grundsätzliche Ressourceneffizienz der Additiven Produktion hinaus. Das Gebäude nutzt innovativ eine Kombination aus Holz- und Stahlskelettbauweisen, um die Vorteile beider Materialien optimal zu vereinen und eine nachhaltige Bauweise zu fördern. In den Technikumshallen wird der Werkstoff Stahl aufgrund seiner hohen Festigkeit und strukturellen Integrität eingesetzt, um den Anforderungen an die Funktionalität für die experimentellen Arbeiten gerecht zu werden. In Ergänzung dazu kommt in den Bürogeschossen die natürliche, warme Ästhetik des Holzes zum Tragen, welche die Orte für die theoretischen Arbeiten und Kommunikation prägen. Diese differenzierte Materialwahl reflektiert die spezifischen funktionalen Bedürfnisse der jeweiligen Räume. This innovative project seeks to create a decentralized, highly adaptable, and resource-efficient matrix production system for next-generation mobility solutions. Our role is to utilize our expertise in #AdditiveManufacturing to strengthen and optimize this cutting-edge production approach. Working with innovative partners, for instance, we designed high-performance brake caliper that reduces weight by over 40% while maintaining the same #performance standards. This breakthrough is just one example of how AM is transforming industries. In his presentation, our Deputy Institute Director, Dr. Frank Beckmann, will discuss how new materials can match the properties of conventionally produced ones, including the first-ever printing of crash-capable high-performance alloys. We dove deep into the transformative role of Additive Manufacturing (AM) in Defense and Security, featuring insights from our expert speakers: 👉 Additive Manufacturing in the German Air Force – Benjamin Wolf shared how AM is revolutionizing aerospace operations. 👉 Mobile Additive Manufacturing: Enabling Spare Parts at the Point of Need – Svein A. Hjelmtveit discussed the game-changing capabilities of on-site production. 👉 Additive Manufacturing in the Military Environment – Andreas E. Steinmetz explored innovative strategies for enhancing military efficiency through AM. After an informative morning, we gathered for a networking lunch, creating valuable opportunities to exchange insights and forge connections with industry peers. With our afternoon's AM360° session we had an allround view of the cutting-edge AM technologies. Thanks to Clemens Lieberwirth, Dr. Dirk Herzog, Dr. Bernard Revaz, Dr. Dr.-Ing. Patrick Mehmert, Sevilia Sunetchiieva and Paul Schwichtenberg for providing us a glimpse into approaches shaping the future of Additive Manufacturing.
