GOTS is the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including social & ecological criteria.

Info

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification for the entire textile supply chain. GOTS covers the entire post-harvest processing (including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing) of apparel and home textiles made with certified organic fibre (such as organic cotton and organic wool), and includes both environmental and social criteria. Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict waste-water treatment practices. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters - Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK) to define globally-recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to finished product. GOTS is a non-profit organisation which is self-financed. For more information please visit our website: www.global.standard.org.

The EU Commission is holding a workshop on Friday 18th October in Brussels on the revision to the Textile Labelling Regulation. Christopher Stopes, GOTS Representative to the EU, is participating in the workshop. GOTS has been working to get organic fibres protected through the labelling regulation! Organic textiles and natural fibres, such as cotton and wool, have a lower environmental impact than synthetic fibres. 👕🩳👙Did you know that most clothes are made from petroleum-based materials? Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods like Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) don't fully capture the environmental impact of the garment's whole life cycle, nor microplastic release and landfill, painting an unjust picture for organic textiles. Organic textiles and natural fibers offer many climate and environmental benefits. Environmental assessment methods must take these into account when comparing organic wool 🐑 or cotton 🌱 to fossil fuel ⛽️ oil-based polyester. Do you live in the United States? We need your support!    Global Standard is thrilled that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed GOTS be added to the Recommendations of Specifications, Standards and Ecolabels for Federal Purchasing, which gives federal purchases guidance on buying more sustainable products.   Why is this important? GOTS could become the first-choice standard in federal purchasing, and GOTS certified goods could become a significant part of the U.S. public procurement for textiles. This will be a win for GOTS-certified brands!   How can you help? The EPA is currently accepting public comments on the proposed updates until October 16, 2024. We need your valuable input to support us in making it a reality. GOTS Representative in DACH Susanne Diener and Public Procurement Specialist, Aleksandra Czajka, recently attended the 25th Beschaffungskonferenz in Berlin. The Procurement Conference focuses on the professionalisation of public procurement, addressing strategic goals such as supply security, sustainability, and compliance with procurement law. It provides both high-level insights and practical help, fostering dialogue between experts and participants to enhance understanding and practices in public sector purchasing. Czajka stresses: “I am happy to participate in this unique event, engage in talks and exchange ideas on how GOTS can foster a more sustainable textile procurement practices.” Susanne Diener spoke on a panel and responded to the Bertelsmann study on the "intention-action gap" in sustainable public procurement. She highlighted that while sustainability goals are widely accepted, actual progress in sustainable procurement remains limited. Factors such as overwhelmed procurement offices and a high need for security hinder progress. Susanne highlights the need for using quality labels as a practical solution to validate and support sustainable procurement processes. Thank you for everyone at the conference who visited the GOTS booth. We are looking forward to next year’s conference and further events to get in direct contact!  • • • • #nogreenwashing #sayyestogots #2024 #field #fashion #fromfieldtofashion #meetgots #organictextiles #eco #fair

#BehindTheSeams starts at the very source of textile products!   Today marks EU Organic Day 2024! Together with Organic Cotton Accelerator, GOTS celebrates the organic sector's growth and encourages textile businesses to support farmers convert to organic growing practices through OCA’s Farm Programme – which transforms how the industry sources organic cotton by empowering famers and boosting availability!    “Organic in-conversion" represents a unique opportunity for the textile industry to lead the way in sustainability!   For the textile industry, supporting "organic in-conversion" products is an investment in the future! By integrating these fibres into your value chain, you’re not just meeting immediate needs—you’re securing the future availability of organic fibres in a market where they are increasingly scarce. Additionally, you can assure your customers of the integrity and transparency of your sourcing practices.    By choosing "organic in-conversion" fibres, you are supporting 35,000+ in-conversion farmers, positioning your company as a leader in sustainable innovation. Transitioning to organic farming requires significant knowledge and resources that no farmer should face alone. Brands that commit to purchasing in-conversion cotton are investing in these supports, resulting in certified crops with significant environmental and economic benefits. This proactive approach will not only enhance your brand’s reputation but also contribute to a more sustainable textile industry.    As part of the European organic movement, we're thrilled to celebrate this day and share the benefits of organic living. Join OCA and GOTS to embrace the principles of health, ecology, social responsibility and care.
