Brevik CCS Project Reaches Mechanical Completion ✔️ To decarbonise cement and concrete, we need to join forces, because only together can groundbreaking projects be realised – such as Brevik CCS, which reached its mechanical completion today. A significant step towards full operation of the world’s first CCS facility in the cement industry, and also on Heidelberg Materials‘ path towards net zero! Our dedicated local team, together with the colleagues in our global Competence Center Cement and committed partners, has worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone. “Mechanical completion” marks the point at which all major mechanical components have been installed and the system is ready for testing. Having reached this point, we are now entering the commissioning phase and look forward to ramping up the plant to full operation. As the first project of its kind in the cement sector, Brevik CCS is an important blueprint for Heidelberg Materials’ subsequent initiatives.

The Role of our OnSite App at a School Construction Site in Hamburg 🏫 Imagine making construction sites safer even for our youngest generations. That's exactly what we did at Ohrnsweg Primary School in Hamburg, Germany on one of the latest projects where our OnSite app played a crucial role. By enabling precise planning and coordination, OnSite helped to ensure a smooth construction process without disrupting ongoing school activities. Deliveries were scheduled outside of school hours, and major concrete pouring was scheduled during school holidays whenever possible. The live tracker feature of OnSite allowed us to accurately plan the arrival times of the mixers and ensure that the necessary measures, such as safety posts, were in place. How do you integrate technology to enhance safety in your projects? 📸 Sebastian Engels

One of my highlights… 👟 Listening in, checking the pulse, and understanding what’s on top of minds of next generation colleagues across our organisation is an important part of my agenda. Recently, I talked to Anne from our Digital Department who shared her thoughts on cross-functional collaboration and what teamwork based on trust should look like. Very inspiring insights. Curious to hear more? Watch the full video to see what drives Anne and her team. Which topic should we feature next? Comment below with your suggestions!

From night to light: Kjøpsvik enjoys the sun after weeks of darkness 🌞 After the polar night, the daylight has finally returned to our cement plant in Kjøpsvik, Norway. For about two months every year, the sun stays below the horizon, creating long, dark days. But when it finally comes out, it's a big celebration in the north! Children are given time off and everyone enjoys a "sun bun" (a delicious cinnamon bun) to mark the occasion. Our local team from Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe took some beautiful photos of this special moment at the Kjøpsvik plant. How do you celebrate the arrival of brighter days in your region?

2007. A new career door opened for me. And with it came the question that newcomers and seasoned executives inevitably ask themselves at those points: What do I want to achieve in my professional life? Do the company values correspond to my own? At the beginning of my time at Heidelberg Materials, I was sometimes asked why I chose to work in an industry that wasn’t perceived as being very progressive. My answer was – and still is – simple: Big challenges hold the potential for big impact and solutions. Yes, the building materials industry has a reputation for being resource-intensive and environmentally taxing. But it’s also so fundamental to our daily lives – it enables the infrastructure that supports our communities, economies, daily lives – and progress. Precisely because of its scale and impact to all of us, our industry has the power to lead transformational change. And that’s been our focus for years: innovating to set new – sustainability – standards for our industry. Here are only a few examples of how we make things really happen: 🟢 evoZero: Our Brevik CCS lighthouse project is poised to become the first industrial-scale carbon capture facility in the cement industry. Once operational in 2025, our customers will be able to leverage our carbon captured net-zero evoZero cement and concrete for their benefits. This innovation embodies our commitment to creating sustainable solutions that are both scalable and impactful. 🟢 ReConcrete: As part of our patented ReConcrete process, demolition concrete is broken down into its original constituents through a newly designed, proprietary crushing mechanism. To enable this on a large scale, a few months ago we inaugurated our first-of-its-kind recycling plant for selective separation of demolition concrete in Poland. Innovations like these highlight our ambition to closing the loop, offering circular alternatives for 50% of our concrete products by 2030. 🟢 3D concrete printing: Allowing for the reduction of material usage and waste, while increasing process efficiency and safety. This innovative approach ensures enhanced design freedom and supports our sustainability strategy by creating products that are fully recyclable. Come and visit the innovative data center home in Heidelberg built by one of our innovative customers. Since stepping through that career door in 2007, my conviction has only grown stronger. The progress we’ve made at Heidelberg Materials contributes to meaningful change in an industry ripe for transformation. Our efforts in sustainability and innovation reflect the values and the impact I strive to achieve. And it´s so much fun – together with our 51.000 entrepreneurs around the world.

“catch4climate” is on track for commissioning 🔬 Another step for our research and development project in Mergelstetten, Germany: Work on the oxygen tank farm plant at the CI4C site is almost complete. The electrical engineering is expected to be completed in the next weeks, paving the way for the planned hot commissioning in the second half of 2025. While the structural work on the CO₂ purification unit plant is progressing in parallel, the steel construction work for this part of the plant is also in full swing. In 2019, Heidelberg Materials and three other European cement manufacturers, Buzzi SpA – Dyckerhoff, SCHWENK Deutschland and Groupe Vicat, founded the joint research corporation CI4C to investigate the practical use of Oxyfuel Carbon Capture technology in the cement production process. That makes it an important blueprint for the large-scale use of CO₂ capture technologies in the cement industry. Stay tuned for further updates and exciting insights into the progress of the project!
