🧙♂️ 𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒉 𝑰𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑹𝑰 𝒙 𝑯𝑨𝑹𝑽𝑨𝑹𝑫 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 🎓 Together with our dear research partner Lingbo Liu from the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) of Harvard University, ISTARI.AI's webAI was deployed at a large scale in #China for the first time to analyze three million #tech companies and their #network. This research was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), among others, and is joint work with researchers of Wuhan University. For the paper, the original "Digital Layer" approach, for which our co-author team recently won the Spatial Economic Analysis Best Paper Award, is extended and transferred from #Europe to China. We investigate the influence of different dimensions of proximity (cognitive, technological, social, etc.) on the development of #innovation in Chinese firms. Our ISTARI.AI webAI technology applied in #China for the first time - in cooperation with Harvard University
I'm excited to share my new paper in Applied Geography. A big thank you to all my collaborators at Wuhan University in China and ISTARI.AI in Germany. Special thanks to my coauthor, Dr. Jan Kinne, the co-founder of ISTARI.AI , for extracting the extensive data for our paper using their impressive WebAI technology. Highlights •This study uses text-based deep learning and Explainable AI analysis on web data from over 3 million Chinese technology companies to evaluate the nonlinear proximity factors within innovation networks. • By integrating hyperlink and textual content analysis with patent data, this research uncovers the nuanced dynamics of urban innovation and collaborative patterns among Chinese technology firms. • The use of XGBoost and SHAP algorithms analyze how geographical, cognitive, organizational, and technological proximities influence corporate innovation in nonlinear and often unexpected ways. • Our findings reveal critical threshold effects and nonlinear correlations within multidimensional proximity factors, thereby offering valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners aiming to bolster innovation ecosystems. Abstract This research explores the nonlinear interactions among multidimensional proximities, including geographical, cognitive, organizational, institutional, social, and technological aspects, and their impact on innovation within networks of over three million technology firms in China. Utilizing an innovative combination of web-based hyperlink and textual data analysis, supplemented by patent information, we delve into how these proximity dimensions influence corporate innovation capabilities. Our methodology integrates text-based deep learning techniques and employs the XGBoost model along with the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) algorithm and partial dependence plots to uncover the nuanced effects of proximity on innovation. The findings reveal that while geographical distance often correlates with larger cognitive and organizational proximities, underdeveloped regions exhibit stronger technological, institutional, and social proximities compared to their developed counterparts. The study further identifies social structure and technological differences as pivotal factors impacting collaborative innovation, with both positive and negative effects fluctuating alongside changes in proximity dimensions. Notably, we uncover that geographical proximity has a pronounced boundary effect on innovation, highlighting the critical role of spatial considerations in the digital age of innovation networks. This research contributes to the understanding of urban innovation dynamics and offers valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners aiming to foster innovation ecosystems.
