    Over the last years, we saw Generative AI become more powerful at an impressive pace. However, especially for text generation, Large Language Models (LLMs) also became larger and larger at the same speed. 💨 While we ❤️ generating emails with GPT-4o and having Claude 3.5 Sonnet write poems for us, the large size of these models produces a high economic and environmental cost. 🌳🔥 That's why Small Language Models are gaining momentum now! 💪 JvM STABLES PRESENTS: LESSON LAIRNED! OpenAI recently launched GPT-4o mini, Apple is using SLMs heavily in Apple Intelligence, and also Microsoft and Google recently released powerful SLMs as open source. Now, also Hugging Face has joined in and released SmolLM, a family of SLMs that are small enough to run on pretty much any modern laptop or phone. The model comes in three sizes: 135M, 360M, and 1.7B parameters and beats SLMs of similar size from Meta and Microsoft on several benchmarks. As the Hugging Face team details in their blog post (link in the comments ⬇️), a key factor in achieving this is carefully curating the data for the quality and capabilities of the SLMs. The cool thing is, that this is a full open-source release, including both models and the data. From sneakers to washing machines, you can find — exactly — all of this "Safe bei eBay." 👟🧺 The key to success and the quick turnaround was the new structure, whose core (client, agency, media planning, and production) forms a steering committee composed of all relevant stakeholders. But our Buldak ferry extravaganza did: 441 (!) press clippings in 35 (!) countries, hundreds of thousands of impressions on social. In one (!) week. We’re beyond excited that one ferry ride could spread this much heat around the globe. It’s just one of those examples where you as an agency can turn one of your client’s obstacles into a great, spicy story that takes on a life of its own.     Remember that one time when a stable AI startup hyped the release of their new diffusion model and then it didn't hold up to expectations and had a bad license structure? 🤔 (ehem, girls lying on grass) Turns out, one can do better. 💎 JvM STABLES PRESENTS: LESSON LAIRNED! Enter Black Forest Labs, a new AI startup founded by researchers and engineers who are behind the original stable diffusion model. A good week ago, they released their new model straight out of stealth mode: Flux.1 is the largest diffusion model publicly accessible to date and comes in three sizes with different licenses: Flux.1 pro is the best version and can only be accessed via paid API. 🔐 Flux.1 dev is distilled from Flux.1 pro and open source (the weights) with a non-commercial license. 📝 Flux.1 schnell is tuned for fast/schnell inference and comes with the Apache 2 License. Since its release it has already attracted quite some attention, the first ControlNets and LoRA have already been trained successfully. In their benchmarks, Black Forest Labs finds that Flux might indeed be the "Midjourney Killer" 🔪 that the open-source community was waiting for.
