🚨 EFSA Reassesses Styrene in Food Contact Materials – Public Consultation Open! 🚨 The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently hosted a stakeholder webinar discussing the re-evaluation of styrene’s safety in food contact materials (FCMs). The scientific assessment concluded that styrene is not genotoxic via oral exposure, based on reliable in vivo studies in mice and rats. Consequently, an SML (Specific Migration Limit) of up to 50 µg/kg food is considered safe, with the proposed limit of 40 µg/kg food deemed acceptable. At knoell, we are committed to keeping you up to date on food safety and food contact material regulations. 📌 For ongoing regulatory updates, critical notices, and key deadlines, follow us on LinkedIn! 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eYncbdUD #knoell #FoodSafety #RegulatoryUpdates #EFSA #FoodContactMaterials #Styrene #knoell

Silicon dioxide (E 551), used as an anticaking agent in various food products, including those for infants, has been reviewed by EFSA. The EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Flavorings (FAF) concluded that E 551 does not pose a safety risk at current usage levels, even for infants under 16 weeks. However, updates to its specifications are recommended. Key Takeaways: 🔍 Risk Assessment: Due to data gaps, the Margin of Exposure (MOE) approach was used. ⚖️ Safety Threshold: An MOE of at least 36 ensures no safety concerns. 🧪 Research Needed: Further studies on particle size and toxic elements like lead and mercury are necessary. These results emphasize the importance of ongoing risk evaluations and regular updates to regulations. 🔍 Reasonably Foreseeable Misuse: A Key Risk Factor for Medical Devices The concept of "reasonably foreseeable misuse" is critical in managing risks throughout a medical device’s lifecycle. Defined as predictable misuse arising from human behavior, it plays a significant role in standards like ISO 14971, ISO 24971, and MDR. 💡 Examples of Misuse - Wound Dressings: Prolonged use beyond intended duration, leading to irritation or infection. - Single-Use Devices (e.g., Contact Lenses): Reuse causing material degradation and adverse reactions. 🛠️ Mitigation Strategies - Design Phase: Usability testing & user feedback. - Post-Market: Complaint analysis & real-world monitoring. With updates like ISO 10993-1 emphasizing misuse in biological risk assessments, addressing misuse scenarios is more vital than ever.
