Leveraging Google’s AI technology, CMA CGM will optimize vessel routing, container handling, and inventory management. These AI-driven solutions will reduce fuel consumption, ensure timely deliveries, and minimize costs while lowering the carbon footprint of global shipping operations. CEVA Logistics, the logistics arm of CMA CGM, will implement Google's AI tools to enhance warehouse operations. This includes smart management systems for better volume and demand forecasting, improving the efficiency of its 10.3 million square meters of warehouse space. A fire broke out on the Maersk Frankfurt, a newly delivered 5,500 TEU vessel, on Saturday, July 20, 2024, during its maiden voyage in the Arabian Sea, 190 km off Goa. The fire, caused by an electrical short-circuit, started in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) containers located in the lower part of the vessel, resulting in the tragic loss of a Filipino crewmember. The Maersk Frankfurt, managed by Bernhard Schulte and chartered to A.P. Moller - Maersk, was delivered from Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding to its Japanese owner, Tokei Kaiun, in May 2024. The vessel is currently stable, with four Indian coastguard vessels—Sachet, Sujeet, Samrat, and Varaha—actively working to extinguish the fire. The authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of the crew and the ship, as they also prepare for potential oil pollution as a precaution. #logisticsnews #maersk #dangerousgoods

The new legislative term in the EU has begun, and road freight stakeholders are vocal about what needs to be done to improve the sector. The International Road Transport Union (IRU)has set clear priorities for the new European Parliament: “people, environment, and prosperity.” People: Addressing the most acute shortage of drivers in decades, the IRU calls for measures to ease access to the driving profession and enhance training. This would not only fill the gaps but also raise the quality of the workforce. Environment: The IRU emphasizes the need for realistic CO2 standards for HGV operators. Stricter targets have been criticized as unattainable for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) due to the high costs of decarbonizing vehicle fleets. An EU-coordinated gap analysis to evaluate grid upgrades for industrial transformation is also essential. Prosperity: Targeted regulations that support, rather than burden, road transport operators are crucial. This includes the digitalization of transport documents and data to streamline operations. Meanwhile, in Germany, the Road Haulage Association (RHA), Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung (BGL) e.V., the BWVL BUNDESVERBAND FÜR EIGENLOGISTIK & VERLADER e. V. (BWVL), and Transport & Environment (T&E) Deutschland (T&E) have urged the government to support the electrification of heavy-duty transport. They call for subsidies and grants to promote the purchase of electric fleets and the expansion of depot charging infrastructure. Without government support for vehicle procurement and charging infrastructure, medium-sized transport and logistics companies will struggle to manage the transformation process by 2030. The Ver.di union and the ZDS - Zentralverband der deutschen Seehafenbetriebe / Association of German Seaport Operators have concluded their fourth round of negotiations on a new labor agreement for approximately 11,000 port workers. ZDS proposed two options: a 12-month contract with €1,000 inflation compensation and a €0.95 hourly wage increase, or a 16-month contract with €1,400 inflation compensation and a €1.15 hourly wage increase. Both options include higher shift allowances and an additional €480 holiday pay. This is set to start on January 1st, 2025. Despite the offer, Ver.di believes it falls short of expectations but acknowledged some demands were met, such as financial bonuses for shift work stress. Union members will vote on the proposals on August 22 and 23. The previous contract expired in May, leading to strikes that disrupted ports in Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Edem. These strikes halted cargo shipments, affecting international trade.  ZDS highlighted that the proposed pay increases are significant given the current financial challenges and the need for investments in energy transformation and training. They believe that the final offer will help maintain confidence in the reliability of port operations. Union members' feedback will determine Ver.di’s next steps.
