🚀 ESA’s Hera Mission Successfully Completes Mars Flyby! ✨ Yesterday, on 12 March 2025, ESA’s Hera mission made a successful gravity-assist flyby of Mars, setting it on a faster, fuel-efficient path to the Didymos binary asteroid system. Along the way, Hera flew to within 300 km of Deimos, Mars’s smaller and more mysterious moon. 🛰 Using Mars’s gravity, ESA’s Flight Dynamics Team expertly adjusted Hera’s course without using extra fuel—an impressive feat of precision engineering. 📡 This flyby brings Hera one step closer to its mission of studying asteroid deflection, an important step for protecting Earth’s future. 🖥️ Watch live today: Images from Hera's Mars flyby: https://lnkd.in/drTGjN-Z A huge thanks for the support to these operations at ESOC to our employees Ritchie Kay, Gabriel Mihail, Johannes Bauer, Lisa Savarieau, Anna Schiavo, Lorenzo Maria Gagliardini, Klara Anneliese Spieker! 🛰️ #Hera completes its Mars flyby! Full steam towards Didymos! On 12 March, the Hera spacecraft flew by the red planet as part its cruise phase through deep space, carefully designed by ESA’s Flight Dynamics team. By coming as close as 5000 km away from Mars, the planet’s gravity shifted the spacecraft’s trajectory towards its final destination, the Didymos binary asteroid. This manoeuvre shortened its journey time by many months and saved a substantial amount of fuel. “Our Mission Analysis and Flight Dynamics team at #ESOC in Germany did a great job of planning the gravity assist,” says Caglayan Guerbuez, ESA’s Hera Spacecraft Operations Manager. “Especially as they were asked to fine-tune the manoeuvre to take Hera close to Deimos – which created quite some extra work for them!” Launched on 7 October 2024, Hera is on its way to visit the first asteroid to have had its orbit altered by human action. By gathering close-up data about the Dimorphos asteroid, which was impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022, Hera will help turn asteroid deflection into a well understood and potentially repeatable technique. 📸 (2) Hera’s Hyperscout H hyperspectral imager: it observes in a range of colours beyond the limits of the human eye, in 25 visible and near-infrared spectral bands to characterise surface materials. 📸 (3) Hera’s science team, including Sir Brian May, celebrate as the first images come in. 🚀 Solar Orbiter Completes Historic Venus Flyby! ☀️🛰️ ESA’s Solar Orbiter has successfully completed its closest-ever flyby of Venus earlier this week, passing just 379 km from the planet! This crucial maneuver tilted its orbit, giving us a new perspective on the Sun’s polar regions, which are invisible from Earth. These flybys are essential for studying solar activity and space weather, helping us better understand their effects on Earth. Guiding a spacecraft through the Solar System is no easy task, but the collaboration of many internal teams made it happen. This marks another step toward unlocking the Sun’s secrets and protecting Earth from solar storms. More flybys are planned and we are excited to see what new discoveries Solar Orbiter will bring in the future! 🚀💡 A huge shoutout to our colleagues who contributed to this operation!
