Our consultants Tim Noack, Marco Stubbe, Marco Zürn, and Thomas Götz recently attended the World Aviation Festival (WAF) in Amsterdam. As a premier global tech event, the festival brings together airlines, airports, and their top executives. With his focus on artificial intelligence, Consultant Thomas Götz shares his key insights: "My chairman does not pay me to buy gadgets." – this thought-provoking statement made during a panel discussion effectively encapsulates one of the key trends in the use of artificial intelligence in our aviation industry. While AI was the dominant theme of this year's WAF, the industry is shifting its attention to tangible use cases and data governance. 1. As anticipated, generative AI (genAI) garnered significant interest, with use cases primarily in the scope of marketing, customer service, and internal knowledge transfer. Nevertheless, it appears that the big momentum is beginning to slow, largely due to unresolved core challenges associated with this technology, including issues such as bias, hallucinations, output quality, and transparency. This has led to a more cautious approach among companies when considering of their investments in this area. 2. In line with this observation, the primary focus of attention was on fully leveraging machine learning (ML) in the aviation industry, which is a more established subset of AI. Especially for the field of Operations, numerous success stories were shared by the participants. Or as John Mangelaars (CEO, Skyscanner) aptly put it: “Machine Learning is ready for primetime!”   3. However, regardless of whether it is genAI or ML, the key message of the WAF seems to be this: It is back to basics! As various participants stated, use cases across the aviation industry are very similar. Therefore, the actual competitive advantage lies in the ability to make effective use of the data. At this, the industry is not facing an algorithm challenge, but a data governance challenge. In short, the aviation industry is experiencing a distinct shift towards practical AI applications that can create immediate business impact.
