The award, presented by Haspa | Hamburger Sparkasse and the Hamburger Abendblatt, celebrates innovators in Hamburg across three categories: startup, rising star, and lifetime achievement. Planeteers, a climate-focused startup founded in 2022 by Florian Birner, Florian Brinkmann, Dr Frank Rattey and Prof Jens Hartmann, won the startup category for its groundbreaking CO2 capture solution. The company’s modular reactors, which can be deployed at industrial sites, use the natural limestone weathering process to safely store large amounts of CO2. We at Startup City Hamburg are extremely proud to have supported this amazing company! Sinus Nachrichtentechnik GmbH, a leader in communication systems for critical infrastructure, received the rising star award. The company, founded in 1983, provides essential communication solutions for industries, public utilities, and emergency services. With over 90 employees at five locations, Managing Director Marcus Landschof 's company recently achieved an annual turnover of 18 million euros. Klaus-Michael Kühne, the long-time CEO of Kühne + Nagel International AG, was honoured with the lifetime achievement award. Kühne’s leadership in logistics, as well as his contributions to Hamburg’s cultural, educational, and philanthropic sectors, were highlighted by Hamburg’s First Mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher. Last Friday, I was very lucky to catch the amazing team Planeteers in their garage in Hamburg. I am glad to have had a chance to learn from Frank and Florian and to see their stack so early on. I hope it will be one of those visits that I'll remember years from now. Without getting into further details at this stage - the visit triggered three broader thoughts: 1. The most powerful #carbonremoval methodologies will be those that scale up or accelerate natural processes. 2. The difference between #engineeredsolutions and #naturebased will be increasingly blurred as a result. 3. We might well soon see the rise of landscape-scale interventions with very loose #MRV. For what is worth, such "YOLO" approach will blur the boundary between large-scale #CDR and small-scale #geoengineering. Should it come to pass, let's hope it does in an orderly and somewhat coordinated fashion...
