Osteoporosis accounts for more days in the hospital than breast cancer, heart attack, diabetes, and other diseases. Due to this fact, the cost that osteoporosis imposes on healthcare budgets is staggering. In 2010, European Union countries spent €37 billion (US$40 billion), while in 2015, the United States spent US$20 billion, a staggering total annual cost of US$60 billion and growing. Current measurement methods cannot detect the onset of osteoporosis but rather approximate the bone-loss associated relative fracture risk, typically at advanced stages of the disease progression. Early detection is vital because the highest fracture incidence is not seen in people diagnosed to have osteoporosis but in those diagnosed to be healthy or osteopenic (losing bone mass), rendering osteoporosis one of the most underdiagnosed diseases in the western world. Early detection technology to overcome this clinical need was not available, until today. The Porous solution uses quantitative ultrasound (QUS) technology with patented intelligent algorithms being able to measure the cortical bone quality to a microscopic pore level without radiation hazards. The intelligent algorithms overcome the limitations of ultrasound imaging in the bone where waves are scattered, making it impossible to analyze the cortical bone (micro) structure. This unique technology can measure for the first time not only the cortical thickness, but also the microscopic pores and pore-size distribution in human cortical bone of the peripheral skeleton. Due to the use of ultrasound systems (mobile by design), this solution can be used anywhere in- or outside the hospital, e.g., primary care, elderly homes, or even pharmacies. It creates the ability to use the technology for prevention (screening); being able to diagnose patients already at the onset of osteoporosis.

*Unsere Informationsveranstaltung zum Weltosteoporosetag - ein Rückblick* Wir freuen uns, dass unsere Osteoporose-Präventionsveranstaltung am Montag, 21.10.24 anlässlich des Weltosteoporosetages ein Erfolg und gut besucht war 🙌✨ Unsere Knochen sind lebendig – und damit sie stark und gesund bleiben, verdienen sie unsere Aufmerksamkeit und Fürsorge! Wie das gelingen kann, war Thema unserer Veranstaltung. Unsere Teilnehmenden waren interessiert und aktiv in das Programm eingebunden. Die Wortwolke zu Osteoporose entstand hier zu Beginn. Maren Gesina Glüer teilte zahlreiche Informationen über Osteoporose und knochengesundes Verhalten im Alltag und gab Anregungen, das eigene Bewusstsein für Knochengesundheit zu stärken. Das Programm beinhaltete auch eine kleine Bewegungseinheit mit praktischen Muskelkräftigungs-Tipps, die leicht im Alltag integriert werden können. Ein großes Dankeschön für die Unterstützung, die diese Veranstaltung zu einem Erfolg gemacht hat, speziell an Isabel Guttmann, Karen Esser, Agnes von Matuschka, den Potsdam Science Park, und natürlich alle, die teilgenommen haben! With the ageing of the global population, the annual number of osteoporosis-related hip fractures is projected to nearly double between 2018 and 2050. On World Osteoporosis Day, coming up on October 20th, IOF and its more than 330 member organizations from more than 150 countries are sounding the alarm on the growing burden of #osteoporosis, and urging action for fragility fracture prevention. Two Inspiring Days at the Potsdam Science Park Conference 2024 We enjoyed attending the Potsdam Science Park Conference 2024 on October, 14-15th, where this year's theme centred around health. The conference offered valuable insights into innovative research, prevention and the health economy, innovative health start-ups, and best-practice collaborations. The well-attended event provided an excellent opportunity for us to network, forge new connections, and delve deeper into the remarkable work of fellow start-ups. Attending the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Annual Meeting in Toronto was a great opportunity for POROUS to engage in insightful discussions and explore cutting-edge science in depth. Maren Gesina Glüer represented POROUS at the conference, gaining fresh inspiration and valuable ideas for our future through her meetings with experts and colleagues and the latest scientific news. It was also very encouraging to perceive a growing focus on prevention strategies, with global initiatives emerging to improve personalized care for osteoporosis patients. Spotlight on Osteoporosis and Women's Health at WHIS The Women’s Health Innovation Summit in Boston put a bright spotlight on women’s health, highlighting both the significant progress made and the substantial work that remains. The summit showcased impactful initiatives, from visionary leaders, innovators, and start-ups driving the field forward, to public bodies creating frameworks for more equitable healthcare, and private venture capital dedicated to advancing women’s health. POROUS is one such example of impactful women’s health funding. The European Commission’s EIC Accelerator grant enables POROUS to clinically validate ultrasound cortical bone microstructure analysis as novel, insightful bone health diagnostic that empowers women (and men) to maintain strong bones into old age.
