WHO expresses deep concern about the implications of the immediate funding pause for #HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries. These programmes provide access to life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide. A funding halt for HIV programmes can put people living with HIV at immediate increased risk of illness and death and undermine efforts to prevent transmission in communities and countries. Such measures, if prolonged, could lead to rises in new infections and deaths, reversing decades of progress and potentially taking the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally, including many in the United States of America. For the global community, this could result in significant setbacks to progress in partnerships and investments in scientific advances that have been the cornerstone of good public health programming, including innovative diagnostics, affordable medicines, and community delivery models of HIV care. We call on the Government of the United States of America to enable additional exemptions to ensure the delivery of lifesaving HIV treatment and care. Read more https://bit.ly/42yxxIz

Lao PDR has made remarkable progress in protecting children from measles and rubella in a recent campaign, successfully reaching 603,000 children (95.2% of the target) aged 9 months to 5 years across 148 districts. 🌏 Why It Matters This milestone comes at a critical time when global measles cases are rising, highlighting the importance of swift and effective public health interventions. Measles is one of the world's most contagious diseases, but it’s preventable with vaccines. 🏔️ Overcoming Challenges in Remote Areas By prioritizing outreach in remote and underserved communities, health workers and volunteers ensured that life-saving vaccines reached even the most challenging areas. In Phongsaly province, a mountainous and remote region, all seven districts exceeded the 95% target, thanks to strong community engagement and micro-planning with local leaders. This achievement underscores the collective commitment to safeguarding children’s health and preventing future outbreaks of this highly contagious disease. Red more: https://lnkd.in/eSjtim9M

The conflict in #Gaza has severely impacted the health system, leaving North Gaza with almost no functional health facilities. Since October 2023, WHO has documented 75 attacks on Kamal Adwan Hospital, 63 on Al-Awda Hospital, and 28 on Indonesian Hospital, resulting in severe damage and destruction to all three facilities. Kamal Adwan and Indonesian hospitals are currently non-functional, while restoration efforts are underway at Al-Awda Hospital. As part of its 60-day plan, WHO is scaling-up efforts to support early recovery and rebuild Gaza's health system, focusing on restoring essential health services and making hospitals operational.
