📚100 YEARS OF PRESTEL📚 On July 18th 1924, Prestel-Verlags-GmbH was registered at the chamber of commerce in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Prestel’s first publications consisted of portfolios containing facsimile drawings of old master prints.   In the late 1940s, the company moved to Munich, where it continued to publish scholarly works of art history, travel books, and museum guides.   In the 1980s, Prestel broadened out into architecture and children’s book publishing. The boom in exhibition catalogues led to international expansion and offices in London and New York.   In 1999, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung took over. There was a brief period of private ownership before Random House bought Prestel in 2008. Penguin Random House, Bertelsmann’s book publishing arm, provided the platform for Prestel to publish more illustrated non-fiction books for a general audience.   Nowadays, Prestel's publishing programme in English and German includes books on Architecture, Art, Design, Fashion, Food and Drink, Gardening, Music, Photography, and Children’s books.   It is a great testament to our longevity, that we published the first Documenta catalogue in 1955 and again, over sixty years’ later, the catalogues to the fourteenth iteration of the leading contemporary art fair.   Here’s to the next 100!

After all the hard work we put into making books, it is hugely rewarding when the art inside them is finally appreciated as it deserves.

    Architectural Editor for Building Design

Charles Saumarez Smith reviews a comprehensive new photographic study of Carlo Scarpa's work for Building Design. "Cemal Emden’s photographic study of the work of Carlo Scarpa is a remarkable project. "In 2017, he published a study of the work of Le Corbusier, the product of seven years of research, travelling all over the world. In 2021, he published The Essential Louis Kahn. Now it is the turn of Carlo Scarpa. "Because Emden documents his subjects only through what survives, there is little information about how Scarpa trained, his early work in the 1920s, and his first projects as an interior designer. The first included in the book dates from 1935 and involved intervention in the Great Hall — the Aula Magna — of Ca’ Foscari University which looks out through gothic windows to the Grand Canal. "Immediately, the quality of Emden’s approach is clear because he photographs not just the room as a whole, but the details of the wooden screens, the nature of their construction, the sensuousness of Scarpa’s attention to the characteristics of wood. The style of photography is impassive, but scrupulous and assists an understanding of what is being photographed, including the play of light." Vice President at Prestel Publishing

Marina Abramović's must-see retrospective is on until January 1st 2024 at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Her book, Nomadic Journey and Spirit of Places, published by Prestel, September 2023, presents over 300 original artworks made on hotel stationery. Growing up under the Communist dictatorship in Yugoslavia, the artist finally set about her travels in her late twenties and never looked back. With beautifully reproduced drawings, collages, poetry, and recipes, the book documents her peripatetic existence and eventual recognition as a globally renowned artist, proving that, wherever you may roam, art is always with you.
