This Nature paper forecasts that #solar + #energystorage is set to become the cheapest source of electricity across most of the world by 2030. The majority of the switch occurs by 2027. Coal is nowhere to be seen, and nuclear is only the most economic option in Russia, but even that gives way to solar + storage by 2027. This is based on "LCOEssc" which includes system storage costs. Even though storage needs will increase substantially over time, costs continue to fall due to the high learning rate for short term storage. The paper assumes hydrogen is used for seasonal storage and assumes a relatively high learning rate for this too.
