𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘂: 𝗔 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 Amadou, a material derived from the tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius), has been used for centuries in textiles and fire-starting. With its leather-like texture, it remains highly relevant today as a vegan, biodegradable, and low-impact alternative to animal leather. The Kääpä+ and the Trapetsi projects, led by Mari Koppanen, explores amadou’s potential in modern design. By repurposing offcuts into a form-pressed composite, the Trapetsi project integrates amadou into lighting design, resulting in unique lamp prototypes where the material’s warm tones and translucency create a soft diffusion of light. Using a non-toxic, compostable cellulose-based binder, Kääpä+ demonstrates how fungal materials can be both functional and beautiful. Mari Koppanen, a Finnish designer and researcher, specialises in fungal biomaterials. Her work bridges traditional craftsmanship and future material innovations, expanding the possibilities for sustainable design.
