Introducing circularity without compromising patient safety 🚀 For us at SCHOTT Pharma, sustainability is a key driver for future business success and collaboration with partners along the value chain is the decisive factor to achieve it. 🌱 Together with Takeda and Corplex, we’ve just started to address the issue of virgin material need in packaging for pharma. In a large-scale pilot study, we successfully demonstrated closed-loop recycling of corrugated polypropylene trays that are used to transport pharmaceutical vials. ♻ To summarize the results: Our trays made from closed-loop recycled material meet the high quality requirements of the pharma industry and show a reduced environmental impact at the same time. ℹ What does this mean in detail? Our high-quality polypropylene material can be recirculated after use and applied at the same quality level again. This significantly reduces the need for raw materials and cuts emissions per tray by up to 50%, when applying 70% recycled content. As a next step we plan to scale the pilot up to routine operations and support overall industry transformation. Breaking with the need for virgin material in packaging ♻ Today's practice of virgin plastic for packaging in the #pharma industry is a driver of waste and emissions that consumes finite resources. Not only does it generate large amounts of waste, but it also contradicts the industry's ambitious sustainability goals. We want to change that in future. That's why we teamed up with Takeda and Corplex to see how we could replace virgin material with recycled material in a pharma-compliant way. Together, we conducted a large-scale pilot study on the closed-loop recycling of corrugated polypropylene trays used to transport pharmaceutical vials, focusing on the three pillars of operational efficiency, technical feasibility and environmental impact. Introducing our new blister-free syringe concept! Together with our Alliance to Zero partners Schreiner Group MediPharm and Körber Pharma, we've developed a breakthrough packaging solution for prefillable syringes that not only reduces plastic waste, but also significantly lowers the product's carbon footprint across the entire value chain. Our first case study, focused on prefillable polymer syringes for hospital use, showed a 25% increase in pallet packing density and up to a 58% reduction in CO2 emissions.
