𝗕𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻, 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿, 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗲: You won’t believe what these three icons have in common without watching the video below... Today, the 18th Otto Schott Research Award was awarded to Prof. Setsuhisa Tanabe from Kyoto University during the award ceremony in Incheon, #Korea. This award is a longstanding symbol of SCHOTT’s steadfast commitment to fostering research and advancing science – because, as a foundation company, we understand the important connection between scientific research and operational manufacturing very well. 🔬🏭 Prof. Tanabe is a globally recognized leader in developing active doped optical materials, and his contributions to research and education are truly remarkable. Our Head of Communications, Michael Müller, had the great honor of interviewing the scientist. Tanabe-san shared exciting insights into his groundbreaking work, the future of optical materials, and recalled a casual gathering with several SCHOTT veterans more than 20 years ago (including Ruediger Sprengard, PhD., Martin Letz, Jose Zimmer, and many more). When the conversation turned to Prof. Tanabe's passion for singing, Michael offered him the stage. The honored professor took the opportunity to sing “Freude, schöner Götterfunken,” composed by Ludwig van Beethoven and written by Friedrich Schiller — who would have expected a Japanese scientist to sing a German classic? Thanks so much for this inspiring talk, Setsuhisa. You truly deserve this award.

Heading for Jupiter! 🚀 👏 Our congratulations to European Space Agency - ESA! Their Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (#JUICE) successfully completed its groundbreaking lunar-Earth flyby this week. Its double gravity assist maneuver saw it use gravity to slow the spacecraft and change its trajectory, putting it on the path for the rest of its 7-year trip to Jupiter. The mission is designed to survive some incredibly tough space conditions, including high doses of radiation when it finally reaches Jupiter in one of the most dangerous radiation belts in our Solar System. 🔎 On board for JUICE's trip through the Solar System is our optical glass: when the spacecraft reaches Jupiter, our optical glass will help the Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) instrument study the landscape of Jupiter’s moons Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto. Selected for this mission because of their radiation-resistance, our BK7G18 and K5G20 are used for lenses in the beam expander optics of the laser transmitter. Developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), GALA was built by the HENSOLDT team, working together with several international research institutes. Additionally, our optical glass F2G12 and LAK9G15 are used in JUICE’s “eye,” its JANUS camera system, built by Leonardo. JANUS will be providing high-resolution multispectral images of Jupiter's large moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These images will help scientists map the surface of these icy moons. What’s next for JUICE? It will be doing a Venus fly-by next year and two more Earth flybys, and will reach Jupiter by 2031. Congratulations to everyone involved, and stay tuned for the rest of JUICE’s voyage! #space #spaceoptics Photos: 1) JUICE Flyby of the Moon (Credit: ESA/Juice/JMC) 2) GALA Instrument (Credit: HENSOLDT Electronics) 3) JANUS Camera System (Credit: LDO)

You think the impossible. We push the limits. To turn our customers' vision into reality, we always strive to achieve breakthroughs in material #science. By questioning, re-imagining, and pushing the boundaries of science, technology, and materials, our passionate R&D colleagues around the world pioneer groundbreaking #glass and #MaterialInnovations that open up new possibilities. For example, if at one point it was believed that glass cookware could never be scratch-resistant, or that the ability to clean cooktops solely depended chemical cleaners – our coatings development center, located at our global R&D facilities in #Mainz, saw past such barriers. By adding properties to existing substrates, they work everyday to redefine the physical limits of existing materials, enabling products and applications with all-new capabilities that once seemed impossible. 🚀
