The transition to a circular bioeconomy and sustainable food systems has high potential to contribute to societal challenges such as climate change, substitution of fuel resources and to contribute to healthy food and diets, which is why innovation in the bioeconomy should be accelerated. Although there are significant political initiatives as well as R&D and industrial activities going on, which are designed to develop the bioeconomy sector, there are still challenges in relation to getting a wider uptake of the innovation generated in the sector. One key barrier is that actors from different sectors, such as agriculture, food and chemistry still have limited exchange with each other, and that "sectoral silos" exist. Moreover, bioeconomy is not an own dedicated policy field – the public funding and regulation is therefore scattered and partly incoherent across ministries or geographical levels. To address these challenges the EU-funded project ShapingBio will provide concrete information and recommendations for better policy alignment and stakeholder actions to realize the cross-sectoral potential of the bioeconomy and to reduce the fragmentation across bio-based sectors and food system and policies across regions, domains and governmental levels. Last week ShapingBio held a successful Dialogue and networking event called "Bridging the Funding Gap: Scaling Innovations in Circular Bioeconomy" in collaboration with Teagasc, BiOrbic and Furthr. The event focused on exploring strategies to tackle the funding challenges and gaps in scaling innovation. Below you can check out some of the key takeaways, which Dr. Noha Mahmoud kindly has shared 👇
Sustainability | Bio-economy | Nature-based solutions | Project management | Policy and governance | Agri-food | LCA | Water
It was a great honor to be a key organiser for the dialogue and networking event held during #BioeconomyIrelandWeek, themed "Bridging the Funding Gap for Scaling Up Innovation in the Circular Bioeconomy." The event successfully brought together a dynamic mix of entrepreneurs, VCs, researchers, public sector representatives, and financial institutions, all committed to advancing Ireland’s circular bioeconomy. We were honored to have a powerful keynote speech on the role of the scientist in business startups by Kevin O'Connor, alongside engaging fireside chats with; Frank Clarke Omuu Petfood, Aoibheann O'Brien FoodCloud, David Bowels The Yield Lab, and Colette Shirley Bank of Ireland. These discussions provided crucial insights into aligning the needs of both fund seekers and providers. Key takeaways included: - The need for partnerships continues to grow, and both public funding and private investment are essential for scaling innovations. - Collaboration between business leaders, investors, and scientists is vital to scale green technologies effectively. - Sustainability is rapidly becoming a foundational priority for businesses, driven by regulations like CSRD. #Communication, #strategicpartnerships, and #raisingawareness are key drivers to foster the circular bioeconomy. I look forward to seeing how these insights will continue to shape the future of Ireland’s bioeconomy, fostering innovation and sustainability.
