After recently sharing how our setups contribute to advancing research, we're excited to see Sphere Energy mentioned in Nature Chemistry this week, supporting fresh insights in electrocatalysis!🌟 🔍 In this innovative study, Nikolay Kornienko from Université de Montréal and collaborators introduce a novel approach to CO₂ reduction. By using a hydrophobic molecular catalyst at the gas–liquid–solid interface, they achieved selective CO₂ conversion to methane. With over 80% efficiency, these findings mark an exciting step forward in sustainable fuel production from CO₂. ✨ Our Flowing Liquid Cell (FLC) contributed to this research by enabling controlled electrochemical reactions in a flowing electrolyte environment. Designed to adapt to various substrates, the FLC helps researchers explore complex electrochemical processes across diverse conditions. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are growing increasingly important and are a key element for a successful #greenenergytransition. CKW, along with its partners, hosted yesterday's battery forum where we discussed the future of BESS and its incredible potential. Following are some of the key insights: - Sodium-Ion batteries will further gain in relevance, especially for energy storage systems - Most of today's BESS were built with a C-rate of 1. The trend is moving in the direction of 0.5 to 0.25 C - Price variability has increased significantly and will remain high in the long term. Drivers are renewable energies and the need for short-term flexibility - The main reasons for strong growth and the BESS boom are: 💰 Financial attractiveness (especially after the example of the energy crisis in Switzerland in 2023 which led to a 10x pay-back!) 💡Falling investment costs due to lower battery prices, increased innovation and off the shelf solutions ⚖ Contribution to grid stability 🌿 Transformation towards sustainable energy supply In order to minimise risk and optimise returns, it is important to combine as many different income sources as possible ("revenue stacking"). The most important applications are "Peak Shaving", "Ancillary services" (balancing power), "Voltage maintenance" (interesting for grid nodes with high reactive power costs) and the "Electricity market" (utilisation of spreads). The latter will gain massively in importance in the future due to the increase in volatility. The BESS market is booming, not only in Switzerland but across whole Europe.
