Out of 29 teams worldwide, we are proud to be one of the few teams representing Europe in developing more effective solutions to fight wildfires and competing for 11 million euros in prize money. Last Friday, we had the opportunity to test our software with a drone unit in the Dahme-Spreewald district in Brandenburg 🌲 This district is particularly prone to wildfires during the summer months. It was a great chance for our team to showcase our software solution to the emergency responders using DJI drones. One of the key requirements repeatedly emphasized to us is the rapid generation of situation maps that can be swiftly relayed to the control center.🗺️ Currently, the drone unit relies on an open-source solution that often takes hours to map a small forest area. Introducing our real-time mapping system to the emergency responders thus provided significant value. However, one challenge we encountered was the interference caused by BOS radio communication. Using AI to detect Wildfires🔥... AI has often been seen in industry, but it's still underutilized in addressing the impacts of climate change. At TRID, we've committed to supporting wildfire management. However, the primary challenge on the ground remains situational awareness: Where exactly is my wildfire?🔎 Therefore, the future of wildfire monitoring could soon look like this: Drones + Autonomous fire detection using AI + Simple visualization in our web app Tests are planned for this year to assess reliability under real conditions. Today, Marius and Robert from our team had a special task. They taught 5th-grade students the basics of microcontroller programming alongside their usual tasks at TRID. The students impressed us by successfully lighting up an LED strip using their newfound skills. It's often hard to keep students focused, but when they get interested in coding, they enjoy it and dive in eagerly. This workshop, done in partnership with the Dr. Stefan Weiße Stiftung and the Zuse Museum in Hoyerswerda, lasted three weeks with in total three sessions. We're proud to offer kids this chance, as we know how important knowledge in tech nowadays is. Who knows, maybe one of them will become interested in drones in the future.🚀
