ISBSA 17 was held at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples this week, featuring five days of exciting lectures on boat and ship archaeology. Our personal highlights were of course the presentation by our colleague Michał Grabowski together with Jens Auer on the late medieval shipwreck we excavated in the Baltic Sea in 2021, and the 16th century shipwreck from a quarry in southern England presented by Paolo Croce from our parent company Wessex Archaeology. #ISBSA17 #maritimearchaeology #marinearchaeology

The MIA search & recovery project we are executing together with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency was the subject of a news article and video on WGNO ABC26. https://lnkd.in/edQxQmfB #marinearchaeology #uxo #ww2 Hansa Taucher #dpaa #maritimearchaeology

Earlier this month we finished our third edition of the excavation of a Consolidated B24 bomber that crashed in the Baltic Sea in 1944. Together with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency we continued the search and recovery of the remains of the 8 missing crew members and recording associated proof in the hope of reuniting them with their identities and their families. Simultaneously we made a record of prehistoric finds and features together with the archaeologists from Langelands Museum and Moesgaard Museum as it is proven that the B24 wreckage came to rest in a rich prehistoric landscape. #marinearchaeology #marinearchaeology Hansa Taucher #uxo #ww2 #dpaa #sunkenlandscapes

This week we are attending the workshop “Monitoring and Assessment of dumped munitions in the global ocean: An integrated approach”, organised by the University of Malta and Heritage Malta with support from the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme. Nearly 100 participants from a wide range of academic and industrial backgrounds from all over the world are here at the Maritime Museum in Birgu, Malta, to discuss the challenges and options for dealing with warfare agents in our seas. The focus is naturally on the hazards for human health and the marine ecosystem, but also on the archaeological aspects of dumping areas and wreck sites. Today marks the start of the attempt to bring two missing US airmen back home after being MIA for over 80 years. In a joint operation with DPAA, Dutch MoD specialists and the municipalities of Vlissingen and Veere we will undertake dive operations off the coast of Domburg NL. Our goal is to locate and salvage possible human remains that might lead to identification of the missing men. The article is in Dutch, image courtesy US Air Force. #trident #DPAA #360survey #wsmit #marinearchaeology #wessexarchaeology https://lnkd.in/en8KuXND

At the beginning of spring today, it seems hard to imagine that just a couple of weeks ago we had to make holes in the ice on water basins in which we temporarily store the timbers of a shipwreck from around 1700. The timbers come from our wreck excavation and removal during construction work last summer in the Greifswald Bodden. We used the quieter time in winter to clean all the ship parts before recording them with a structured light scanner. The resulting 3D data was then imported into 3D modelling software where it was described archaeologically in full detail. To achieve this, our team spent many days in cold, draughty halls and outdoors in the most adverse weather conditions. Quite often the archaeological work is far less glamorous than most people imagine!

Watch the inspirational video and learn in just 4 minutes how multibeam bathy data can help identify cultural heritage on the seabed. It's amazing!
Did you know that the geophysical survey data your offshore scheme collects are also an essential means of understanding and managing cultural heritage risk for your project? Having a team on board with the specialist expertise, experience and capacity to provide the advice you need and properly analyse and interpret that geophysical data - for marine and maritime heritage, as well as submerged landscapes - is critical to consenting success. In this short video one of our marine geophysicists Robin walks us through the process for multibeam bathymetry, one of the data types we routinely assess for our clients. https://lnkd.in/e7JyFipN We're really pleased to be bringing this expertise to bear all over the world. If you’d like to know more about what we do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. #offshorewind #marinegeophysics #culturalheritage #archaeology Wessex Archaeology
