What a fantastic training day! 🤓 A huge thank you to Historic England for organising ‘The Dating Game’; a Radiocarbon dating and Bayesian modelling training event which I attended a few weeks ago on behalf of Cotswold Archaeology. Hosted at The Harbourside Pavilion in Bristol, we explored the principles of Radiocarbon dating and how Bayesian chronological modelling can be applied to provide robust chronologies for archaeological sites. It was also a great opportunity to reconnect with industry colleagues and meet some new faces within the archaeological sector. Interested to learn more? 👷♀️Becca is one of our archaeologists who has been excavating on-site. She recently uncovered traces of an Early Anglo-Saxon structure (5-7th century) and shares how she reads the land to reveal these hidden stories beneath the surface. Our archaeological team at Sizewell C has made some incredible discoveries, including a possible Roman saltern for early salt production, prehistoric pottery, and the remains of previously unknown medieval buildings across the site. Once the work is complete, we plan to share as many of these discoveries as possible for the community to see. 🌿 🏺 #𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰 – 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 🏺🌿 Bustling medieval Bristol wasn't all leprosy, banquets, and big jugs of ale, and it turns out humble tableware can spill us some serious tea on the subject... Scientific analysis of the fats trapped in the material of pots, jugs, and jars is helping us reveal a surprising amount about daily life in Bristol's Redcliff Quarter. #OCAarchTeam unearthed 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 20,400 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘴 at the site (yes, we had to count them all 😮💨) and we're finding pig-fat roasting pans, plant processing vessels, and jugs that held far more than wine 🐷🍷 Want to know what other medieval mysteries they were cooking up in the 12th century? ⛑ 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆... Revealing stories from the building's time as an 18th-century prisoner-of-war camp, a cholera hospital, and later as a 19th-century workhouse, the site offers a glimpse into the lives of those who existed through challenging times in Bristol’s history. Our team has been carefully working to record a significant number of burials, and bring their stories to light. We've taken some time to pause our channels and reflect on the legacy of our Chairman, Tim Darvill. We're grateful for the kind messages and tributes we've received from you all over the past 10 days. Tim’s passion for "doing good archaeology" will always inspire us – we're going to get back to our regular updates knowing that genuinely is 'what he would've wanted.' Tim, we’re carrying your commitment to heritage and archaeology with us as we move forward – thank you for everything. #CheersTim #Archaeology #CASiteTeam #CAArchTeam #Legend
