Science is exciting and interests people - the Open House at the Garching Research Campus proved this more than impressively. Die Jungfernfahrt fand in prominenter Begleitung statt: Münchens Oberbürgermeister Dieter Reiter, der Bayerischer Staatsminister Markus Blume, Technische Universität München-Präsident Thomas F. Hofmann, Sabine Effner (Mobilitätsreferat der Landeshauptstadt München) und Wiesn-Chef Clemens Baumgärtner waren an Bord. Annette Lietz (center) was awarded the best metallographer in Germany at the "Materialographie 2024" Conference in Berlin. Congratulations🎉 With her contribution "Moon Landing: AI 5083 DED-Arc-Plasma Wire Technology of Aluminum Alloys", she won first place in the photography competition on the topic “General Materialography” of the German Society for Material Science. Since 2023, she has been working at the Chair of Materials Engineering of Additive Manufacturing with Prof. Peter Mayr. Last Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the "NEBourhoods - New European Bauhaus Lighthouse" in Neuperlach, Munich. As one of several proud participants in this initiative, our TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) with its Department of Architecture are contributing to shaping #sustainable #urbandevelopment and #community-focused #architecture. "Creating Neighborhoods Together" is a #collaborative effort bringing together experts from #academia, #industry, and the #public sector to redefine #urbanspaces for the future. President von der Leyen’s visit not only emphasized the importance of these endeavors but also recognized the collective efforts of all #people and #partners involved. “Yes, there are problems. But we also have solutions!” Andrea Gebhard welcomed the guests to the auditorium of the Munich Urban Colab yesterday afternoon as part of our DLD Conference Nature Deep Dive. The task, she said, was to collect and replicate these solutions. And so the project partners of Creating NEBourhoods Together presented their solutions on the topic ‘’Reconnecting with nature”, which we are implementing in Neuperlach for the New European Bauhaus as spaces adapted to nature and climate. Sebastian Clark Koth kicked things off by reminding us of the value of public space and solutions that serve “public comfort”. His focus is on the challenge of increasing heat stress in our cities, the urban heat island. The answer developed for Neuperlach is replicable shading architectures for places where no natural shade providers, no trees, can be planted. Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig then presented the “vision of a Baubotanik street with tree faces”: In contrast to technically constructed buildings, Baubotanik structures are in active exchange with their environment. They can maintain and repair themselves and change the microclimate of their immediate environment – “buildings as trees”. “Architecture needs to connect”. With the Ecolopes research group, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weisser is putting his idea into practice: the group developed a software plug-in that can be used to design building envelopes as habitats for various species – plants and animals alike. The prototype of a climate-adaptive and animal-friendly facade element, created together with TUM Digital Fabrication, was immediately convincing. Prof. Dr. Thomas E. Hauck reminded us that contact with nature makes people healthier and happier, and his method of Animal-Aided Design was used in Neuperlach to create the “Nisthocker”, among other things. Their underlying approach sounds as simple as it is good: animals and plants are understood as actors in the planning process. Marlene Stechl, on the other hand, transforms agricultural waste into high-quality building materials. As part of #NEBourhoods, she and her start-up HopfON were linked up with local companies in Neuperlach. They have now completed their first project: 14 square metres of acoustic panels made from hops have been installed in the Sustainable Living Lab NEXT MANNHEIM. Circularity is also the topic of Prof. Dr. Werner Lang and his team in Neuperlach. But what we need to change to make the transformation of our neighbourhoods a success starts much earlier: we have to move away from planning in linear structures and instead think in systems, in alternatives, from different perspectives – Design thinking. For a few weeks in the summer of 2023, the streets of Munich's Südliche Au and Walchenseeplatz districts were transformed into temporary green and recreational areas. This initiative sparked numerous public discussions about the future of urban traffic and neighborhood design. Researchers from the Technische Universität München have now evaluated the outcomes of these real-world laboratories. The results are in: a majority of residents rate them positively! 🌟 🏡 Community Involvement Households expressed a desire for further initiatives to transform street spaces into areas for greenery, recreation, and alternative mobility options. 🌍 Climate Action and Mobility Most people highlighted the need for action due to climate change and are willing to engage in experiments on the future of mobility. 🌳 Support for Green Spaces A clear majority supports the permanent conversion of parking lots and streets into green spaces.
