UniSysCat (Unifying Systems in Catalysis) unites natural scientists with the aim to revolutionize catalysis research.
Info
UniSysCat stands for Unifying Systems in Catalysis. We are a Cluster of Excellence - a group of more than 250 researchers from the four universities of Berlin and Potsdam, the Charité and four cooperating research institutes in the Berlin and Potsdam area. More than 85 percent of all industrial products come into contact with a catalyst in the course of their production. Catalysis research is therefore not only one of the most important areas of research in chemistry and biology, but is also a key driver in "green chemistry" which focuses on sustainability and the conservation of resources. Here, UniSysCat's innovative research comes into play. UniSysCat is an interdisciplinary research network working jointly on coupled reactions in catalysis. We aim to understand, control and design reaction networks in chemical and biological catalysis. To master this challenge, our research groups are comprising molecular and structural biologists, biochemists and biophysicists, physical and theoretical chemists as well as physicists. The research consortium includes the Technische Universität Berlin as spokesperson institution, the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the University of Potsdam, the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Helmholtz Center Berlin and the Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology in Berlin.

Don't miss tomorrow's #UniSysCat colloquium with Dr. Ulrich Glebe from Universität Potsdam who will talk about his work on the stabilization of enzymes and their use in #catalysis. Enzymes are sensitive #biomolecules which are prone to denaturation and benefit from approaches to their stabilization. Synthetic polymers represent one possibility to stabilize enzymes and can even influence their activity. This presentation will give an overview of the synthesis of protein-polymer conjugates, including random and site-specific modification, as well as non-covalent enzyme/polymer complexes. Furthermore, characterization techniques, such as #NMR spectroscopy, that give molecular insight into the modification of proteins and the interaction of polymers with proteins will be shown. As outlook, the application in cascade reactions, enzyme immobilization, and enzyme-polymer membranes will be discussed. Interested? You still have the chance to join online. 🦠Research Highlight: #UniSysCat team shows that UV/Vis and IR #spectroscopy are useful tools to visualize the smallest structural changes in whole proteins, even in living cells. A UniSysCat team involving the groups of Joachim Heberle and Ramona Schlesinger was able to investigate a microbial chloride pump, which is of interest for medical applications, in living cells using time-resolved IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. They could monitor transient structural changes of the retinal cofactor, which is the part of the chloride pump that mainly controls the response to irradiation. Moreover, out of the many signals observed during the response of the chloride pump, they could clearly resolve the deprotonation of a single cysteine residue which is suspected to play a special role in the pumping process. The results are not only groundbreaking for #spectroscopy but also for future projects of UniSysCat - Cluster of Excellence when it comes to understanding catalytic processes in living cells. This study has been published in #JACS: Sabine Oldemeyer, Mariafrancesca La Greca, Pit Langner, Karoline-Luisa Lê Công, Ramona Schlesinger, and Joachim Heberle, Journal of the American Chemical Society 2024 146 (28), 19118-19127, https://lnkd.in/eQTDZx4B Read the full article on our website: https://lnkd.in/extPG63G Freie Universität Berlin #biophysics #catalysis #optogenetics Dr. Sabine Oldemeyer
