    Battery cell manufacturing is the key technology for the mobility of the future! 🔋🚗🌍 But let’s face it—scaling up battery production in Europe isn’t easy. The industry is facing what many call "Giga-Hell": ⚡ Low Yields – To be globally competitive, we must dramatically improve production efficiency. 🏭 High CAPEX Investments – Quality solutions require significant upfront costs. In the semiconductor industry, CAPEX investments in quality solutions make up around 30% of total factory costs—a benchmark battery production must aim for to achieve similar precision and efficiency. 🤖 Digitalization & IoT – Smart manufacturing is essential to scale while maintaining quality.     Bei der #Batterieforschung muss es weitergehen, denn sie entscheidet über die Technologieführerschaft in zentralen Zukunftsfeldern, sagt Bundesforschungsminister Cem Özdemir. Deshalb stellt das BMBF eine Überbrückungsfinanzierung von bis zu 25 Millionen Euro bereit. So sichern wir die Kontinuität in diesem wichtigen Forschungsbereich: „Mit Mitteln des BMBF werden wir die dringendsten Projekte angehen. So senden wir ein Signal der Verlässlichkeit. Eine neue Regierung muss daran anknüpfen und den Batterie-Turbo zünden. Die Batterie ist der Schlüssel, um die Welt von morgen mitzugestalten“, betont der Minister. Durch die Förderung des BMBF ist in Deutschland ein wettbewerbsfähige Forschungslandschaft zum Thema entstanden. 2023 fiel ein Großteil der Fördermittel weg.     🌍 VCbattery at "Batterien für die Zukunft – Anwendung trifft Forschung," here's what we learned at DESY's Groundbreaking Battery Summit! 🌍 Bernhard Muerkens was delighted to participate in the groundbreaking event Batterien für die Zukunft – Anwendung trifft Forschung, organized by Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, Fraunhofer ISIT, and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). This event brought together leaders from science and industry to address critical questions: 🔋 How can we make the batteries of tomorrow safer and more efficient? 🔋 What cutting-edge technologies can revolutionize the market? 🔋 How can we collaboratively strengthen a forward-looking value chain in northern Germany? Special thanks to Dr. Oliver Seeck from DESY for hosting this remarkable gathering of battery innovation leaders. As a proud partner in the North German battery research cluster, it was inspiring to connect with industry pioneers like Nils Wulfes (Strategic Projects Manager, Northvolt-Heide), Dr. Andreas Würsig (Head of FAB-SH, Fraunhofer ISIT-Itzehoe), and Benno Leuthner (Managing Director, CustomCells-Itzehoe). A highlight was the fascinating tour of DESY's cutting-edge laboratory facilities led by Marc Thiry, (Industrial Relations Officer, Helmholtz-Centre Hereon), showcasing their world-class 3D X-ray capabilities for materials research. 🔬 The event also highlighted the accelerating pace of German battery innovation, based on a June 2023 German patent research study: 📌 Germany accounted already in 2022 for 19% of all battery-related patent registrations, trailing only South Korea (25%) and Japan (20%), and ahead of China (16%). 📌 German car manufacturers such as BMW (175 patents) and Volkswagen/PowerCo (125 patents) lead the way from an OEM perspective, demonstrating the country's growing strength in both innovation and production, but are still very much challenged by leading cell manufacturers such as CATL (CN, 295 patents) and LG (KR, 768 patents).
