European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

The laser group at the EuXFEL has developed and installed dedicated high power ultrafast laser sources for use in pump-probe experiments in conjunction with x-ray pulses at 7 experiment stations. The complex lasers and non-collinear optical parametric amplifiers contain both in-house as well as collaborative industry developments. The high-repetition rate laser systems operate 24/7 during user operation. Laser Physicist / Engineer (f/m/d)

The position

Working closely with other laser specialists at EuXFEL, the candidate will:

• Gain a thorough understanding of the laser systems and sub-systems in operation as well as of associated control electronics and software.
• Assure reliable routine user operation of the pump-probe lasers.
• Support our continuous improvement process (CIP) by designing and implementing optical and opto-mechanical components and assemblies.
• Perform maintenance and repair of ultrashort pulse laser systems.
• Select, acquire and manage spare parts and assemblies.

Requirements

• Bachelor or Master's degree or equivalent academic or industrial experience in photonics, laser engineering or similar. A PhD is considered an asset.
• Experience with work in laser labs, in particular with ultra-fast lasers, high power fiber and/or solid-state amplifiers, parametric amplifiers and the associated measurement and characterization methods.
• Hands on experience with CAD and electronics is highly valued.
• Experience with Python is strongly desired.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills and the ability to work in a multilingual, multidisciplinary team with English as the working language.
• Knowledge of German and work experience in a large-scale facility are considered assets.
