Info

The MEESST Project: Magnetohydrodynamic Enhanced Entry System for Space Transportation has been funded under the prestigious FET-OPEN: Future Emerging Technologies program Novel Ideas for Radical New Technologies: Challenging Current Thinking. The EU has dedicated almost €3.5 million towards this ground-breaking project, which will develop and build the first ever demonstrator of a High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) magnet for spacecraft re-entry shielding applications. The conditions of atmospheric re-entry impose precarious challenges on spacecraft, ranging from ultra-high heat loads of over 1500 degrees, to radio communications blackout due to the presence of highly ionised atmospheric gases. Exploiting the electromagnetic field generated by an HTS magnet to shield the spacecraft will bring a technological leap for space systems, and will lead to a paradigm shift away from expensive and heavy physical thermal protection systems towards lightweight and flexible magnetic shielding. In turn, the use of HTS will enable more capable and more powerful spacecraft, and the execution of new mission possibilities such as interplanetary cargo, asteroid mining, and sample return missions. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 89929.
