🔄 Throwback to our episode "#12 Rostock: A 'Smile City'" with Claus Ruhe Madsen What if positivity was the key to transforming a city? Back when Claus Ruhe Madsen was the Mayor of Rostock, Germany, we were inspired by his unique vision of a “Smile City,” a concept grounded in positivity and people-focused growth. His approach to fostering community engagement, streamlining city processes, and driving a resilient mindset is just as relevant today as when we recorded our conversation. 🎧 Listen to the episode here: https://lnkd.in/esfStZGT Fast-forward to today, as Madsen, now CDU Minister of Economic Affairs of Schleswig-Holstein, continues to bring this positive mindset to Germany's biggest policy discussions. In his recent appearance on Maybrit Illner, one of Germany's most known political talk shows, he emphasised what he sees as missing in German policy: optimism, collaboration, and decisive action. In a lively exchange, Madsen pointed out the contrast between German and Danish approaches to governance: 1️⃣ Unified Action: Calling for a “Team Germany,” Madsen believes that solving Germany’s economic woes requires true collaboration, much like Denmark’s tradition of minority governments. 2️⃣ Cutting Bureaucratic Red Tape: Emphasizing that excessive regulation hampers growth, Madsen advocated for reform to streamline processes, similar to his "Smile City" strategies from his days as Rostock’s mayor. 3️⃣ Restoring Optimism: Madsen urged German leaders to embrace a more positive vision for the future, noting that economic resilience is tied to public morale and faith in leadership. 📰 Read the full article (in German) on his perspective in Maybrit Illner here: https://lnkd.in/eV9_jv6X #SmartCity #UrbanInnovation #CityLeadership #EconomicResilience #SustainableGrowth #SmileCity #PublicPolicy #PositiveMindset #Collaboration #PolicyInnovation

Together, they reveal how community engagement and effective messaging can turn climate awareness into meaningful action. 💬 As Ilaria explains, “The more data you give on climate change, the more difficult it is for people to become active. Rather than inspiring action, it can make people feel as though the problem is insurmountable.” 💬 Josephine highlights the collective impact of small changes, saying, “Individual actions are crucial because together they can create larger cultural shifts. Missed our latest episode? 🎧 https://lnkd.in/e_sq-bzi Episode #93 features Marvin Rees OBE, former Mayor of Bristol, and Joanne Anderson, former Mayor of Liverpool, sharing their experiences as leaders in major European cities. They discuss the challenges and responsibilities that come with being the first Black leaders in these roles, and the steps needed to foster true diversity in urban governance. From promoting inclusive policies to navigating the complexities of representation, they emphasize the importance of intentional action. As Marvin puts it, "Graciousness and humility are key. Sometimes activism and political opposition sacrifice impact because they want profile and to be seen to be right."
