Important news❗As of May 27th, the first-ever EU rules to curb methane emissions from the energy sector in Europe and across the globe have become legislation. This is a huge milestone in the global efforts to map and reduce methane emissions. From here, operators have 30 months to implement annual site-level measurements of methane emissions on all operated assets and 48 months to do the same for non-operated assets. Explicit is the only ISO accredited lab offering drone-based site-level measurement services compliant with the new regulations requirement for independent verification. Important news❗ The EU Parliament has adopted the new EU Methane Regulation with an overwhelming majority - 530 votes in favour, 63 against and 28 abstentions. The new regulation is the first piece of EU legislation implementing strict monitoring and reporting requirements within the energy sector, aimed at cutting methane emissions. It covers direct methane emissions from the oil, fossil gas and coal sectors, and from biomethane once it is injected into the gas network. The Regulation now heads to the Council for final adoption. Yesterday, ICCT’s Marine Program Director Bryan Comer presented the results and policy recommendations of the Fugitive and Unburned Methane Emissions from Ships (FUMES) report to the 81st session of the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee in London. Measuring flare destruction and removal efficiency is not always a "hot" experience. 🔥Not when the weather is grey and cold. ❄️ Luckily our engineering team is used to working in all sorts of climates. Explicit has recently secured key funding from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP) to research flare plume behaviour and to demonstrate our new application for measuring actual flare destruction and removal efficiency using sniffer drones. Do #methane emissions from ships fueled by liquefied natural gas (#LNG) present a higher climate risk than officials assume? 🛳️ 🌍 💬 On 14 March, we are organizing a #webinar to discuss our results from real-world methane emissions from ships powered by LNG. Bryan Comer, Jörg Beecken, and Robin Vermeulen will present the findings of the #FUMES project, an ICCT collaboration with Explicit ApS and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). The project collected the most comprehensive dataset of real-world methane emissions from LNG-fueled ships to date, including methane slip from marine engines and fugitive methane emissions from LNG cargo unloading operations. The investigation concluded that real-world methane emissions from the most common LNG-fueled marine engine averaged 6.4%, whereas EU regulations assume 3.1% and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) assumes 3.5%.
