🌍 COP16: Agriculture and food sectors as key players in biodiversity protection  Among the notable achievements of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held under the theme “Peace with Nature,” was the inclusion of agriculture and food sectors as essential components in addressing biodiversity loss. COP16 provided a collaborative platform for global leaders, decision-makers, and stakeholders to advance discussions on minimising agriculture’s impact on biodiversity. The focus centered on promoting sustainable agricultural practices and contributing to biodiversity conservation, restoration, and sustainable use.    🌾 The role of soil health in biodiversity and sustainable farming  Soil health is fundamental to sustainable agriculture. However, intensive farming practices, especially nutrient runoff, can impact soil ecosystems, affecting biodiversity and resilience. Healthy soils are essential for nutrient cycling and supporting biodiversity, both of which help farmers and communities adapt to environmental changes. Innovations like DLF’s Ecotain®, a nitrogen-reducing forage crop designed to improve soil health by addressing nitrogen leaching. Ecotain® achieves this through a natural process: 🌳 Reduced nitrogen discharge: When livestock consume Ecotain®, it lowers nitrogen levels in urine, reducing nitrogen leaching by 20% to 60%. 🌱 Enhanced nutrient absorption: Ecotain® contains natural compounds that slow the conversion of ammonium to nitrate, allowing plants to absorb more nitrogen while minimizing runoff. 🪱 Improved soil structure: With its deep-root system, Ecotain® adds organic matter, fostering a balanced ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and insects essential for soil vitality. 💡 Do you know what happened exactly 20 years ago today? Hint: A manifesto was created.  If you said the formulation of the New Nordic Kitchen Manifesto, at the Nordic Kitchen Symposium in Copenhagen, you would be correct! 🍽️ In November 2004, chefs, farmers, policymakers, and food advocates from across the Nordic Region gathered with a vision to create a culinary approach that embraces sustainability, ethics, and the unique character of Nordic cuisine. The vision:  ”As Nordic chefs we find that the time has now come for us to create a New Nordic Kitchen, which in virtue of its good taste and special character compares favorable with the standard of the greatest kitchens of the world” ✨ Now, two decades later, much of this vision has become a reality. In Denmark, the influence of the New Nordic Kitchen Manifesto is evident in the global acclaim of Michelin-starred restaurants like Noma, Geranium, Restaurant Jordnær, and Alchemist. These restaurants exemplify the manifesto’s principles, celebrating sustainability, seasonality, and innovative uses of Nordic ingredients. And the positive influence of the Manifesto extends beyond just fine dining; even a visit to midrange or budget restaurants in Copenhagen or Aarhus often becomes a unique culinary experience. Exceptional quality and innovative ideas permeate the Danish gastronomic scene, and over the years, the Manifesto’s impact has trickled down, bringing better food to more people. As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to the next 20 years of Nordic gastronomic innovation, sustainability, and distinctiveness in every meal. 🥂    Explore the best of Danish gastronomy by clicking the link here: https://lnkd.in/ewRcV8iB  #SustainableFood #NordicCuisine #FoodInnovation

🌱 Did you know that Denmark is implementing one of the world’s most ambitious agreements to increase biodiversity?   At COP16 Colombia in Cali, from October 21 to November 1, a Danish delegation will showcase how Denmark is advancing the biodiversity agenda. A long tradition of research, innovation, and strong public-private partnerships makes Denmark a leading player in the green transition of food, agriculture, and land use. Denmark’s Green Tripartite Agreement was developed by the government, the agricultural sector, environmental groups, and business leaders. The deal introduces an agricultural CO₂ tax and emphasizes afforestation and peatland rewetting to lower emissions and promote sustainable farming. The agreement includes the New Green Area Fund of approximately EUR 5.4 billion, supporting initiatives such as afforestation and rewetting of drained peatlands. This means that 15% of Denmark’s existing agricultural area will be converted to forests and rewetted zones. One standout example of company engagement in the biodiversity agenda comes from Danish coffee producer Slow, which is transforming coffee’s environmental impact through regenerative farming. Through agroforestry and reforestation, Slow integrates trees and diverse crops with coffee plants, creating a rich ecosystem that enhances biodiversity, improves soil health, and reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. In Southeast Asia, Slow has achieved a net-negative carbon baseline by planting trees and capturing more CO₂ than they emit. Each kilo of coffee produced captures 6 kg of CO₂—a significant contrast to traditional coffee production, which typically emits over 5 kg. With 44,000 trees planted in 2023 alone, Slow is making a lasting impact, proving that coffee production can actively support climate goals, biodiversity, and community livelihoods. Read the Slow case on our website: https://lnkd.in/dWRFdm2R Get involved with the Danish delegation at COP16 and gain insights and best practices from Denmark!

⬆️🌍 As the global population heads towards 9.8 billion by 2050, feeding everyone will require a significant boost in food production—about 50% more! But did you know that 17% of food is lost after harvest? This poses a serious challenge to global food security and sustainability. SME iGRAIN, Denmark is tackling this challenge with innovative technology that transforms grain storage monitoring. Their system tracks temperature, moisture, and CO2 levels, enabling early detection of spoilage and infestations. 🌡️ With real-time data available on the iGRAIN Smart App, farmers can easily safeguard their crops and minimize postharvest losses, translating to higher-quality grain, more profits for farmers, and better global food availability.   Want to learn more? In 2022, 735 million people—9.2% of the global population—suffered from chronic hunger. How can the agri-food industry accelerate solutions that drive lasting change and ensure global food security? 🌍   Today, on United Nations World Food Day, we celebrate the founding of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization 79 years ago. While significant progress has been made, there's still work to do to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2: "End hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture." ↘️ By 2030, the number of people suffering from hunger is projected to drop to 600 million—a step forward, but far from achieving 'Zero Hunger.' In Denmark, many agri-food companies are already leading the way with innovations designed to fast-track the change we need. Some key examples include: Arla Foods Ingredients whey proteins that help elders meet dietary protein requirements and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
