We are thrilled to announce the publication of our latest paper titled: “The Importance of Genetic Counseling for Turner Syndrome Transition” in the esteemed journal European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. The healthcare transition (HCT) is a critical process that involves planning, monitoring, and adapting clinical management as patients move from pediatric to adult care. While this is a vital step for all children, it is particularly challenging—and crucial—for those with chronic conditions, genetic disorders, and mental health concerns. In this comprehensive review, we focus on the transition process for girls and young women with Turner syndrome (TS), one of the most common sex chromosome aneuploidies. We explore the unique challenges related to their behavioral, neurodevelopmental, and mental health needs, which must be carefully managed for a successful transition. Our colleague Dimitrios Kyriakidis attended a highly instructive and insightful course on rare diseases this week. Organized by Marisol Montolio, the Scientific Director of the University of Barcelona (UB) Chair on Rare Diseases, the course offered a comprehensive program. Topics included an introduction to rare diseases, clinical and genetic diagnosis, the importance of clinical research, drug repositioning, and the creation of spin-offs from academic research. Dimitrios emphasized the importance of developing better, faster, and more affordable companion diagnostics for rare diseases, which would pave the way for more treatments and help many families living with the burden of these conditions. Researchers discovered that even one copy of a protective genetic variant can help prevent early-onset Alzheimer's disease. This finding originated from a unique patient case, who did not develop cognitive impairment until her late 70s, despite a high genetic risk for the condition. Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the study provides the first evidence that a single copy of the Christchurch variant (APOE3Ch) may offer protection against autosomal dominant Alzheimer's, although less effectively than two copies. Further investigation, led by Yakeel T. Quiroz, PhD and Joseph Arboleda-Velasquez, revealed 27 family members, who carried both the Paisa mutation and one copy of the Christchurch variant experienced a delayed onset of Alzheimer's disease compared to those without the Christchurch variant. The presence of the APOE3Ch, whether alone or in combination with the Paisa mutation, provides some level of protection against Alzheimer’s. Functional brain imaging and autopsy samples supported the protective role of the Christchurch variant, showing less Alzheimer’s pathology. The findings are promising for drug development for delaying cognitive decline and dementia in older individuals, indicating potential benefits of targeting this genetic mechanism, and develop effective interventions for Alzheimer's and guide treatments for broader Alzheimer's populations. Functional brain imaging and autopsy samples supported the protective role of the Christchurch variant, showing less Alzheimer’s pathology. The findings are promising for drug development, indicating potential benefits of targeting this genetic mechanism to delay cognitive decline and dementia in older individuals. Today, June 28th, we celebrate International Neonatal Screening Day and emphasize the importance of newborn screening. The birth of a child is a time for celebration and a crucial moment to assess their health. Newborns undergo blood tests to check for rare diseases and serious conditions. Early diagnosis saves lives. However, of the 140 million babies born globally each year, only 1 in 3 receive any type of screening. Newborn screening, a simple blood test, can identify serious conditions requiring prompt treatment. The practice began over 50 years ago when U.S. microbiologist Robert Guthrie developed a blood test to detect phenylketonuria (PKU), a metabolic disorder that causes intellectual deficits if not detected early. Guthrie's test, now performed worldwide, allows for early diagnosis and treatment, giving affected babies a chance at a healthy future. Exciting Insights from MedTech Summit 2024! Recently, we had the privilege of attending the MedTech Summit 2024, an exceptional event that brought together industry representatives, regulators, and consultants to share experiences, trends, and challenges in the regulatory field. Our Head of Quality, Antonina Burlachenko, remarked on the summit’s value: “MedTech Summit was a great event, allowing representatives of the industry, regulators, and consultants to meet and discuss experiences, trends, and issues in the regulatory field.” A key focus this year was on machine learning technology and the EU AI Act.
