✨ Hempel A/S contributes to guidelines that impact the evaluation of low-friction coatings on vessel speed RightShip, with contributions from Hempel, has provided an update to the calculation of Existing Vessel Design Index (EVDI). The update is used in assigning a Green House Gas (GHG) rating to include the benefits of low-friction marine coatings, which improve ship efficiency 🚢💨 A leading ESG-focused digital maritime platform, RightShip has long supported the decarbonisation of the maritime industry with its GHG rating system of the world’s fleet 🌏 💡 The system supports vessel owners, managers, charterers, financiers and ports to make informed decisions by promoting the availability and selection of more energy-efficient ships. 🫱🏽🫲🏽 Now, with contributions from Hempel, a mechanism to calculate EVDI focusing on the role of low-friction coatings has been completed. Released on 6 November 2024, these Low-Friction Coating Guidelines for the EVDI empower ship owners to demonstrate the positive impact of low-friction antifouling coatings, like Hempel’s Hempaguard, without needing to conduct sea trials. 🎙️Dr. Yigit Kemal Demirel and Stavros Sklavounos, Hull Performance Solution Managers at Hempel, shared what this change means for the maritime industry. H: Can you explain what RightShip’s GHG rating is all about? Y: RightShip’s GHG rating is a benchmarking tool that assesses the environmental efficiency of ships by measuring their carbon dioxide emissions relative to similar vessels. It helps industry stakeholders make informed decisions by promoting the selection of more energy-efficient ships. H: What does this development mean for the industry? S: It’s a pivotal development for the maritime and coatings industries, as it marks the first time that out-of-dock power savings from low-friction antifouling coatings are accurately included in a design index, much like other energy efficiency technologies. This gives industry stakeholders more clarity when making plans for which energy efficiency technologies to put in place as part of their decarbonisation plans. H: What role did you and your Hempel colleagues play in this development? Y: Low-friction antifouling coatings, like Hempaguard, are among the most accessible and effective ways to enhance the energy efficiency of ships. However, measuring their impact without conducting sea trials has been challenging. My colleagues and I have been advocating for the precise modelling of these coatings’ effects on ship performance by submitting experimental results, evidence and calculations from our own framework. We’re proud to have contributed to the development of such impactful guidelines published by RightShip. H: Thank you Yigit and Stavros! #DecarbonisingShipping #HullEfficiency #MarineCoatings #Sustainability

Whether it’s braving open-water swimming or charting new paths, Matt Fletcher, Segment Development Manager, Linings at Hempel A/S, loves a challenge 🌟 We spoke to Matt before he heads for the ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference, to learn about his journey and what’s next for Hempel in tank linings 💡 H: How did you get into the coatings industry? M: My German skills! I became fluent after completing part of my engineering studies in Germany. A polymeric solutions company needed an engineer who spoke a foreign language. I took a chance and here we are 25 years later! H: Who are your customers and what are their challenges? M: Many of our customers are in the oil and gas industry, where running storage tanks profitably is crucial. This requires keeping tanks operational for as long as possible while ensuring high safety standards to prevent leaks that could cause fires and environmental harm. Tank linings are special coatings inside these tanks that protect them from corroding and leaking. H: Why did you decide to join Hempel? M: With over 20 years’ experience in the tank linings market, it’s fair to say I’m passionate about it! I see a great opportunity for Hempel here and I think it’s exciting to lead the linings strategy at a global level. In addition, it was easy to join Hempel knowing that our daily work contributes to the philanthropic work of our majority owner, the Hempel Foundation. H: What does your role involve? M: I support our sales colleagues around the globe, to help them sell linings with training and joint customer visits. To ensure Hempel continues to meet our customers’ needs in the future, I guide the linings innovation and R&D projects. We’re about to launch two new tank lining products, and I’m excited to showcase them at ADIPEC next week. I advise customers on which solutions would be best for their tank linings. One of the tools that helps me do this is Hempel’s sustainability product scorecards. They allow customers to compare the sustainability profiles of their chosen Hempel coating systems. You could say I’m a sustainability product scorecards superfan! I’ve given presentations about them at AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance, and I’m proud to say that a new standard is being created in the coatings industry as a result. H: How do you recharge outside of work? M: I’m a keen swimmer and love open-water swimming. I was part of a six-person relay team that swam from Ireland to Scotland where the water temperature was 14°C. What an experience! We couldn’t see the bottom of the sea, just an endless blue-green expanse. The jellyfish were clear to see though! Beautiful from a distance but a bit worrying when they came close! Hempel sponsored the team, and we raised over €8,000 for the IFS Foundation, which aims to break the poverty cycle in rural Sri Lanka. H: Thank you, Matt! 🫱🏽🫲🏽 You can meet Matt at ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 4-7 November 2024 in Hall 12, Booth 12240

🌱 A week of growth and exploration Svetlana Pereverzeva, our Vice President of Group Finance, has just spent a week with other senior global Hempel A/S leaders, as part of Lighthouse, a talent programme for our most senior leaders. 💡 Developed and delivered entirely by Hempel employees, Lighthouse focuses on strategy, execution and leadership. Svetlana and her group spent the week exploring the essence of authentic leadership. Part of the programme included visiting philanthropic projects in Tanzania that are driven by our majority owner, the Hempel Foundation 💙 ✨ We asked Svetlana for her highlights from the trip: H: What was your ‘aha’ moment from the training? S: A previous leadership training I attended before joining Hempel focused on telling leaders what to do differently. In contrast, this week focused on maximising our strengths and making us aware that our biggest strength has the potential to cast the longest shadow. The point being that we need to watch that we don’t overplay this strength. This approach was a revelation for me. H: What part of the training will you first put into practice when you get back to the office? S: I will take my colleagues’ advice onboard and make it a point to pause and breathe more often :) On a serious note, I plan to incorporate more time for reflection in my day, seek feedback from colleagues and actively listen so I can respond more thoughtfully. H: How has this experience impacted your personal and professional growth? S: Meeting other Hempel leaders in an unconventional setting was an amazing opportunity because it helped us to get to know each other better, appreciate our differences and understand each other’s preferences which will enhance our efficiency. H: What made you smile? S: Being able to see for myself the philanthropic work of the Hempel Foundation. It’s impressive to see how the Hempel Foundation carefully selects which projects to engage in, ensuring they make a real and tangible difference. Knowing that our daily efforts at Hempel contribute to this incredible work fills me with pride and justifies the dedication and intensity we bring to our roles. H: What advice do you have for colleagues or aspiring leaders who want to develop their leadership skills? S: Embrace your strengths and stay true to yourself. Genuine leadership begins with authenticity. H: Thank you, Svetlana! #CompanyWithPurpose #HempelAtHeart #LeadershipDevelopment #SociallyCommitted #Tanzania 📸 Pernille Fritz Vilhelmsen
