🔙 #TBT The year 2023 celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a crucial document for the rights of #IndigenousPeoples globally, as it provides a universal legal framework emphasizing core values of equality, non-discrimination, and justice. 🚫 The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), adopted in 2007, highlights the right to free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC), which is vital for Indigenous communities whose lands are increasingly under threat from climate-related projects. Despite this, many powerful actors continue to infringe upon their territories without proper #consent. 🌿 Indigenous Peoples play a crucial role in preserving much of the world's remaining #biodiversity, contributing valuable knowledge and practices essential for climate resilience. 🌳 In 2023, #IWGIA, alongside 55 partners, made significant strides in defending Indigenous rights across 32 countries. This included active involvement in climate and biodiversity policies at both national and international levels. 🔑 Key achievements include supporting Indigenous governance of territories, advancing #autonomy, and spotlighting the negative impacts of conservation and green energy projects on Indigenous communities. IWGIA also documented these struggles through publications, media outreach, and global governance efforts, ensuring the rights and voices of Indigenous Peoples remain central in addressing climate and environmental challenges. 👉 Read our full Annual Report 2023 here: https://bit.ly/3N8m6hD #IndigenousPeoples #HumanRights #AnnualReport #climate

✊IWGIA welcomes the statement by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, José Francisco Calí Tzay, and UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Chairperson, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, for the interim government of Bangladesh 🇧🇩 to take immediate action to protect the Indigenous Peoples in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) who are suffering from increasing violence. 👉Read the UN statement here: https://bit.ly/407twJQ 🔎We also welcome their call for the interim government to allow for an unhindered UN investigation into the numerous human rights allegations in the region. 🙏We hope the interim government will heed the UN's statement, as well as those of many other international organizations, including IWGIA, CHT Commission and AIPP. 👉 Read the IWGIA, CHCT and AIPP statement here: https://bit.ly/4f4VUk1 #HumanRights #IndigenousPeoples #Bangladesh #CHT #Chittagong Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact

Indigenous representatives at SIRGE Coalition JUST TRANSITION: Indigenous Peoples’ Perspectives, Knowledge and Lived Experiences Summit challenge mainstream interpretations and implementations of what the Just Transition to a “Green Economy” is being defined as, which often does not represent a full transition from harmful impacts or real justice for #IndigenousPeoples.

🌟 On this International Day of the Girl Child, we celebrate the courage, vision, and leadership of girls around the world. ♻️ Indigenous girls often face intersectional discrimination and violence rooted in both their Indigenous identity and their gender. Yet, despite these challenges, Indigenous girls continue to rise as powerful agents of change. In Indigenous communities, women have long played key roles as leaders, knowledge holders, and protectors of cultural heritage. Indigenous girls follow this legacy, shaping the future for themselves, their families, and communities. 🎉 Let’s celebrate and support the contributions of Indigenous girls, listening to them and contributing to an environment free from violence and discrimination, enabling Indigenous girls to thrive and raise their voices. #DayOfTheGirlChild #IWGIA #IndigenousGirls #Empowerment

I Danmark kender man nok især Mohammad Yunus for at have modtaget Nobels Fredspris for hans arbejde med mikrolån.

🌍 The #Philippines has huge potential in renewable energies, with 246,000 MW of untapped energy, but the rapid expansion of projects often threatens Indigenous lands. The governments’ National Renewable Energy Programme is pushing for a 50% renewable energy share by 2040, but many projects violate Indigenous rights. 🏞️ Many communities are left out of decision-making. Large dams and energy projects often bring militarization, land grabbing, and human rights violations. #Indigenous Peoples, who have long protected their lands, are sidelined as foreign investors gain more control under new laws. 🌱 A just transition must go beyond clean energy - it must include Indigenous voices and #respect their rights. ✊ As the Indigenous Summit on the #JustTransition approaches on October 8 - 10, it's vital to spotlight Indigenous Peoples in the renewable energy conversation. Let's push for energy solutions that are fair, inclusive, and protective of these communities. Climate justice = Indigenous justice. 👉 Click here to read more about the situation in the Philippines: https://bit.ly/4dyPcS4 #Philippines #JustTransition #climate #TheIndigenousWorld #IWGIA
