Support the Saamaka People in demanding that the Surinamese government legally recognize our collective land rights. At COP16 Colombia, we voiced our concerns about injustices in our territories. Our youth representative, Biza Akienboto, joined Indigenous colleagues from around the world in solidarity. Key points to note: - Suriname is the only country in the region that does not recognize Indigenous and Tribal Peoples' rights. - We have won legal cases against the Surinamese government in 2007 (Saamaka case) and 2015 (Kali’na/Lokono case), but these rulings have not been fully executed. - The government continues to pursue unsustainable development. - Although Suriname is called "the most forested country," deforestation rates prove otherwise. - Recent government announcements include oil and gas production investments, which severely affect the environment. We must speak out against these discrepancies. Our land rights are essential for protecting our land from injustice. I appreciate the efforts of our partner organizations to support our cause! We can't stop, we won't stop.
