Novo Nordisk Foundation CO₂ Research Center (CORC)

On October 23rd at 4:00 PM (CET), CORC CO2 Research Talks will host Michael Reiter from ETH Zürich! 🦠🔬 Join Michael as he tells the story of how he and his team rewired the metabolism of E. coli bacteria to grow on methanol—using it as their only source of both carbon and energy! 🌱 His science shows a promising path for microbes to become zero-emission chemical factories that can transform methanol into various useful chemicals. 🔗 Could this be a key piece in the puzzle of turning the chemical industry green? 🌍 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐎𝟐: 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 Last week, CORC had the pleasure of hosting the Novo Nordisk Foundation Science Cluster Conference in beautiful Favrholm, Denmark. The event brought together brilliant minds from academia and ecosystem partners to discuss dream reactions of CO2 – Carbon Capture, Conversion, and Beyond. Key sessions:   🧱 Innovations and Challenges in Carbon Capture & Utilization  🌾️ Pioneering Strategies in CO2 Utilization: From Circular Manufacturing to Sustainable Food Production  ⚙ Advancements in Carbon Capture Technologies  🧪 Catalyzing CO2 Conversion through (Bio)catalysis  ⚡ Harnessing Electrons for CO2 Utilization  🔥 Comprehensive Approaches to CO2 Valorization  🔬 Designing Photoenzymes for Bio-Inspired CO2 Solutions  The event also featured inspiring poster sessions where PostDocs and PhDs presented groundbreaking research.     It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and discuss the future of carbon as a resource for a sustainable world. We’re excited about the next steps in turning CO2 into value 🌿 A big thanks to the scientific committee, editors, speakers, and all participants for making this event a success. 

Stanford News recently published an insightful article on the Cargnello group’s breakthrough in catalyst design for converting carbon dioxide into ethanol 🤜🧱 Ethanol is a crucial component in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, biofuels ... and alcoholic beverages 🍻. Traditionally, ethanol is produced from crops, which requires significant amounts of agricultural land 🌾. However, with advancements in catalysis, there is the potential to produce ethanol directly from CO2. For et forskningscenter som CORC kan det være udfordrende at kommunikere med de helt unge, men som man siger: "Hvis du ikke kan forklare det til en 6-årig, har du nok ikke helt forstået det selv" 🤷🏼 ... den er måske lidt gammel. Det kan være svært at komme i gang, og derfor er det vigtigt at få støtte fra mere erfarne kræfter. Og at kunne koge komplekse emner ned til en simpel og forståelig essens er en evne, der kan bruges i mange forskellige situationer! We were delighted to see such a diverse group of active participants attending, asking questions and sharing insights. The open and curious conversations were truly inspiring and insightful. 💡 To quote Claus Felby, SVP Biotech, Novo Nordisk Foundation, in one of our debates on how we envision a sustainable society in 2040, we truly need ‘tro, håb og opfindsomhed’ (‘faith, hope, and ingenuity’) to move forward our joint transition to a sustainable path for our planet. Panellists agreed: Youth and more experienced generations need to work together. The elders offer valuable insights on the richer nature of the past and the simpler, less resource-demanding lives then. They have the capacity to help support the youth in building a sustainable future. Regarding ingenuity, the CarbonForum was also the place to discuss perspectives on new carbon building blocks, emerging technologies and how we best implement new technologies, the role of investments into carbon technologies R&D, and project deployment. Several participants highlighted how corporates have the chance to take a lead and create the necessary demand, and also that regulation is needed to drive the green transition forward.
