We are beyond thrilled to announce that Constructive Institute Asia Pacific will be up and running early next year. This will be under the leadership of Kate Torney OAM, who is the former news director of Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and former CEO of Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation Limited. This new hub is our second after Germany (in partnership with Bonn Institute) and will be followed by more hubs in more continents. What began in Denmark is now spreading to different parts of the world and we can't wait to see the changes it brings about in both local and global media landscapes. Is there space for constructive journalism amid war and invasion? Yes, says Anastasia Rudenko, founder of Rubryka. This Kyiv-based media publication has been using constructive journalism to not just talk about problems, but also solutions to them. At our Constructive Copenhagen Summit back in May, Anastasia explained how this approach to journalism has been helping their over 2 million monthly Ukrainian readers deal with news fatigue. Goodbyes don’t have to always be tearful. Some are filled with hope and excitement for what it is to come. We feel this every year as we bid farewell to a graduating class of Fellows. This year, we also have (our first!) graduating cohort of Climate Explorers. Our Fellows and Explorers will go back to their newsrooms and careers in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Argentina, Australia, India and Kenya. While their time with us may have come to an end, it is only the beginning of all the new opportunities and stories they will embark on. As Ulrik Haagerup said in his speech to them, "When you walk out of CI today, we will sit back with wet eyes and swollen hearts, knowing that you will make us proud, because you already do. We are blown away by your talent, dedication for change, curiosity for people, passion for storytelling and concern for people other than yourself. The Climate Explorer program may have come to an end but the journey to telling constructive climate stories has just begun! Here's our Norwegian Climate Explorer Kristian Elster back at work at Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK), explaining the Danish CO2 tax on agriculture. "It feels good to be back in the action in the newsroom. Being a climate explorer was a privilege. Now I have the opportunity to put it into practice. This is my second day back at work, so it’s early days yet. But I already have put a couple extra questions (about constructive journalism) on my check list of what stories to prioritize," he says. Martin Luther King did not mobilize by shouting “I have a nightmare.” That is worth remembering for any media executive reading the Digital News Report 2024 from Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at University of Oxford. The report is a new wake up call to news media worldwide. News avoidance is spreading like a global virus. “Rethink,” the man behind the Report, professor Rasmus Kleis Nielsen appealed to editors at the WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers Global Conference in Copenhagen end of May naming that even the furniture industry is more innovative than the media business. Editors might learn that the constructive approach would be to ask “now what”, when the problem is documented. And publishers, editors and journalists can find concrete inspiration in newsrooms, where implementstion of constructive journalism now wins back audience, trust and better economy. Five months and many learnings later… 🌎 We are proud to present the findings by Mahima Jain, Mactilda Mbenywe, Liam Mannix, Kristian Elster and Tais Gadea Lara, who were a part of the pilot cohort of our Climate Explorer Program. Over the course of the fellowship, one thing was clear: News organisations are looking for ways to attract readers and audiences are hungry for climate news, but the story has to be told in new ways. Rather than conflict, we need nuance. Rather than anger, we need science. Rather than climate journalism as usual, we need the constructive climate lens. The resources put together by the team is all that more relevant after what Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism released in their Digital News Report 2024 (#DNR2024) yesterday: “Re-engaging audiences will also require publishers to rethink some of the ways that journalism has been practised in the past; to find ways to be more accessible without dumbing down; to report the world as it is whilst also giving hope; to give people different perspectives without turning it into an argument.” When it comes to reporting on one of the biggest crisis humanity faces, the constructive climate lens is just what we need. 🔎 Here’s a deep dive into what it is, why it works, and how you too can use this in your day-to-day work, be it as a journalist, editor, scientist or climate communicator. “Climate change exacerbates all the issues India is already facing. Which is why I wanted to learn how to report about it across beats and sectors, and not just in silos,” says Mahima Jain, our Climate Explorer from India. That’s exactly what Mahima spent time on discovering during the last five months with us, alongside her four peers from Argentina, Australia, Kenya and Norway. While there was always a passion to tell more climate stories, that is now infused with renewed hope and zeal on how to do it better. Minister visits Constructive Institute How can constructive journalism change the narrative about Africa - and inside the Continent of the Future? The Danish Minister of Development and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen shared ideas with Fellows and Climate Explorers at Constructive Institute at Aarhus Universitet on how #constructivejournalism can restore trust, dialouge and enlightenment in our democracies. News media are essential to inspire, nuance, engage and combat misinformation from Russia and China. But journalism needs a new constructive mindset, new formats and new tools. Our visits in Eastern Africa documents a huge interest and need among publishers, NGOs, reporters, J-students and politicians.
